I am wondering what is the process for sending diamonds to grading labs? Are most diamonds graded when they make their way to jewelry stores? What percentage of diamonds have no lab grading report? I would have thought that all diamonds after they are cut would be sent to be graded. Would it make sense to say that a diamond purchase without a grading lab certificate would probably mean that it has not been graded by a lab? Would most/all vendors automatically provide a certificate with a diamond purchase if it had one?

I ask because, we have never been diamond saavy, but I always knew that I wanted an upgrade from 20 years ago when I got my first engagement ring. My husband just recently upgraded me to a 1.5 ct princess cut diamond ring. Its an H, VS1. The jeweler that he bought it from has been a part of my family for many years and we trust him. (His sister is my godmother and my aunt). Its hard to say how much of the $9600 went towards the 1.5 carat stone and how much went towards the setting. I was not there for the purchase and my husband does not pay attention to details at all. I think though from what I can tell though that the setting was somewhere around $2200. So, I believe that somewhere around $7400 went to the stone. Would this be about right for a 1.5 ct princess cut stone that has no grading report? It is really pretty to me. I compared it next to a diamond that is a lab graded vvs2, G. I cannot tell the difference in the color of the two at all in direct sunlight and inside of the house. The clarity looks very similar also. This jeweler is one of those kind that knows everyone in this community and would tell someone "I have just the stone for you" and would really pretty much know what that person wants. I''m really not sure how much time he spent or tried to spend educating my husband on the 4C''s. Like I said, I''m not married to a detail man. I want to ask him if this stone has been lab graded, but I don''t want him to think that I don''t trust him. I was hoping that state farm would have asked for one when I had it insured, but they didn''t. Is there any other good reason to ask for one? I''m wondering where all of the table, depth, size dimensions came from that he lists on the appraisal? Do most jewelers have equiment to measure this? How common are ungraded stones?
