Thanks for all the responses to my setting question. Since most comments were directed to the stone, I now have a Sarin report to go with the GIA info:

Shape: RB
Weight: 1.517 ct
Color: F
Clarity: VS1
Polish: EX
Symmetry: EX
Fluorescence: N
Depth: 59.6% (4.47 mm)
Crown: 34.0''
Table: 56% (4.21 mm)
Pavilion: 40.5''
Culet: N (0.6%)
Girdle Th-M (0.7%-1.2%)
Diam: 7.50 mm

Offered at $15,200. I''m not terribly concerned about carat weight (she is a size 4), and I think this is the best stone I have found in my budget. Any naysayers?

Wow, that should be a *real screamer* assuming there isn't much variance behind those pavillion\crown averages and the lower facets are cut appropriately. It's hard to find stones like that with 40.5 pavillions, usually wink seems to be the only one cutting them. Hope that sarin is accurate.

As far as *value* is considered, that's a reasonable price but not a *good* one... It's worth trying to negotiate it down about 1k. Comparable stones are going for slightly less, for example:

Thanks. Yeah, I know the price is not rock-bottom, but the dealer is a friend of a friend so I feel more comfortable doing this deal than with somebody I don't know. I believe they will give me a discount for paying with cash, and their price on the setting is very competitive.

WOW! Ran it through the HCA and it got 4 EX's, with a final score of 0.2, EX, "within TIC range". Egads, I don't think it gets any better than this!!!

The price MAY be a LITTLE high... but prices everywhere are on the rise, and you are comfortable with the dealer... so personally, I say, go for it... and FAST!!!

When observing diamonds with shallow/shallow combinations be careful to view these diamonds in diffuse daylight and preferably next to one with pavilion angles slightly steeper (but not over 41 degrees). I have found in my research that stones with shallow pavilion angles (even within the AGS "0" range) have mediocre contrast. In direct lights (like what's typically found in jewelry stores) it should be a very fiery stone. In diffuse light (which empahsizes brilliance instead of fire), this is where you want to be more careful. .2 on the HCA *to me* is a definite red flag of this too. Some of the worst ideal cuts I've seen have been .5 and under regarding this issue.

Very interesting and enlightening post, Rhino. Thank you! Yikes, whatdoIknow?!!!

I prefer a HCA score of .9-1.3 range with crown angle 34.2-34.4, pavil 40.7-40.8, but if you scan this stone on another sarin machine you might get a different reading...don't take my advise i know nothing.

Rhino ~ That's pretty interesting. Is this the effect Gary alludes to about some light leakage being a positive thing because it renders the stone dark enough so the the colored light (fire) can be seen?

In other words, does a .2 HCA say "too brillant" for the fire to be seen?

I don't know anything either, but I think this might be more a matter of the "head obfuscation" that Garry refers to?

I think, but can't be sure, that these are two different things. Rhino posted an extensive thread on this topic I believe a few months ago. I need to see if I can find it now.

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I think you're right, noobie. Though I would also worry about that in a shallow/shallow stone.
