I hope you enjoy this article and agree with me that the developments, that I have been fortunate enough to witness first hand, are quite remarkable. The article is well written:

Automation brings advantages, but man has final word
Automation has provided the diamond industry with the ability to secure consistent, reliable results and increase yields at a time of falling margins.

If ever there was an industry where the expression “man versus machine” was more apt, it must surely be the diamond industry. Diamond polishing has been carried out for hundreds of years, and for most of that time it was done with minimal automation. A man hunched over a polishing wheel adjusting the position of the stone is a common image of the diamond industry, until very recently.

In some respects it was perception of diamond cutting and polishing as a craft, rather than an industrial pursuit, which delayed the onset of properly automated factories. For it is only in the past 20 years that computerised systems for the measurement of rough stones and their appraisal, working in tandem with machines for the cutting and polishing of the gemstones, have become a natural part of the landscape of the diamond industry worldwide.
