I know this is one of these incredibly broad search requests that often end after a few replies... but these are really my current requirements. I'm a long time member actually but I'd like to keep these details away from my personal account for a variety of reasons.

:wavey:

I'm looking for a large stone... or even completed ring... that is a good value, is interesting, eye catching, and quite unique. Something elegant and well, durable (?). But doesn't need to be perfect. Character is fine. IE I'm *NOT* looking for a 3ct H&A colorless eyeclean stone in a 4 prong cathedral setting. (though they're beautiful  but that's not my desire)

I know many of you browse estate/vintage/etc sites and probably have a better idea of some "diamonds in the rough" that are available. The only thing really set is the budget. And even that is... negotiable given a killer stone.

So any suggestions? What would you buy?

Or places to suggest? I am working with one vendor already. Seems hard to just tell a vendor "I'm looking for a great stone, big, chunky facets, warm color, great deal, go find em..." it's so broad.

Thanks

I'd get this 5 carat AVR from GOG and then you'd still have a great budget for a setting. It's about 42k and then 8k for the setting

If your looking for an actual antique just let me know-I've got some time to hunt-but I need a bit more specifics-any particular shape/setting style/etc. But with that budget you can probalby get van craeynest to set that stone above (or any stone) or singlestone or Mike in New Zeeland and have a one of kind heirloom piece yourself :)

Does Leon Mege list the certs and stone dimensions somewhere? And are there additional photos that I'm missing? I don't find the website the easiest to navigate.

I LOVE the french cut suggestion but this is to be an engagement ring so I'm not sure how I feel about a 3 stone.

I'd use Steven Kirsch for all of these settings.

What about the 4 carat J VS1 antique cushion from OWD? It's $47,330. Not sure if this link will work, but you can sort by carat weight or price to find it: http://oldworlddiamonds.com/detail.php?ID=1376&SHAPE=C

Link did work and that looks great-- the dimensions especially. I haven't been on that site recently.

...they have some yummy OECs too.

I don't care about it being an actual antique...and I have marked that particular stone you've linked over and over. A definite front runner. :appl: I'm actually not usually all that attracted to the true antique pieces because of how "delicate" they appear. I'm not exactly a delicate person.

WOW. Um, I'm marking this one... the setting is perfect and so is the stone. My size too. I'm wondering what "light yellow" means... is this like GIA graded fancy light yellow? or "light yellow" like just visually.

There are some lovely gorgeous large stones out there. One that comes to mind is justginger's "poppy." But, do you want a large, unique cut stone in a simple setting or are you looking to "pizzazz" up the stone with a unique setting?

You nailed it. I want pizzazz from the stone... but a simplier more straightforward setting.

And Poppy is just about perfect in my eyes. Imagine that GOG in a Poppy-esq setting... though I may prefer to do a buttery yellow gold instead.

My favorite oval three stone setting:

Do you have experience with this seller...?

This is great though I wish it had a bit chunkier faceting... with all the recutting going on these days on PS...the possibilities are endless.

This is very very very nice... though it is over budget. I love the profile view. It's pretty clean and simple from a distance but up close it has great details

Light yellow is a GIA range of colors and usually means the stone is more tinted than N color and less tinted than R color. Graded in a setting sellers often give a range like that.

That stone worries me a little about under table darkness. You'd need to see it in person to be sure.

And more generally: I need more information before I can possibly make suggestions. What do you like in your diamonds? Precision? Bold chunks? Quirks? Round or square? A single large diamond or a three stone or another look in terms of hand coverage? Color range? Honestly, you will get suggestions all over the map. Its too broad.

This is my favorite too. I love that it's an authentic antique Tiffanys piece. I wonder if they will negotiate. :naughty:

I lean more towards bold chunks than crushed ice.

I like warmth...even up to fancy yellows.

I prefer round(ed) over square(r) stones.

As for setting style... I have a fairly conservative "normal" lifestyle and am hard on my rings. I'm not usually attracted to overly delicate rings or excess pave/melee. This will be my engagement ring so I envision a simple large stone in a styled, but sturdy and sleek setting. WB will be bold enough to be worn alone as that will likely happen quite often.
