Question about girdle thickness. My understanding is that if it''s too thin, you''re risking potential damage to the diamond, and if it''s too thick, your giving up spread for unseen weight. So, a happy medium seems to be....well, medium.

However, how thick is too thick? If everything else checks out on the diamond, how much do you give for the girdle? Is there a cut off that certain people go by?

For a specific example, I decided against a stone the other day because the avg. thickness was around 2.3%. Is that too picky? The current stone I''m considering averages out at 2.0%, that seems more reasonable, but would most consider that too high?

Thanks

2.3% at the girdle valley is midway along slightly thick on the AGS system (they all vary).
If the stone is exposed in a prong setting I tend to prefer thicker than thin, but less than Thick (>2.9%)

Well, my GF always said I was too picky.

Thanks Garry

Ahwaw no - you measured her girdle too????

Heh, I wouldn''t dare.

Garry, I have a question. Do you still run diamond proportions through the DiamCalc for people? I think I finally have my stone, but I''d love an expert opinion before I "pull the trigger".

You will get as good as it gets from HCA.

But if you can get a sarin 3D diamvision file I will do the real thing for you

Got the Ogi report - this is a perfect example of how misleading it can be to post diamcalc images from too little data.

The stone has a chaeated girdle and will leak light in the upper girdle facets.

The pavilion has a lot of variation - but it is OK because it is mirroed well.

Sorry to appear ignorant, but what is a cheated girdle?

Better yet, Garry...could you post some visuals?
