Hello,

I have a Radiant stone on layaway. This is a trade in on a .91 Princess cut, so I can't really shop around. Of course I could just keep looking there...
I love(d) the radiant, however, when I came home to research diamond terminology I started to get concerned. Mainly, is the girdle thickness something I should fret about?

Shape: Radiant
Carat: 1.2
Clarity: SI1 (inclusions are mainly twinning wisps which I could only see thru a loupe)
Color: H
Cut: Very Good
L/W Ratio : 1.27
Length (mm): 6.93
Width (mm): 5.46
Depth %: 68
Table%: 63
Girdle: Very Thick-Extremely Thick
Symmetry: Excellent
Cutlet: None
Polish: Very Good
Florescence: None

Thank you for any help!

You shouldn't have any issues with that girdle - it is not at risk of damage, which a Very Thin to Extremely Thin would be.

It will 'hide weight', though, so the stone will face up smaller than other stones with a medium girdle, say.

Yes, I'd avoid very thick girdles because it will likely make the stone face up smaller than it should. May as well buy a lower weight diamond that is better cut. But compare the diameter measurements to some others of similar weight and see how much difference there is.

Many well cut Radiant cuts have thick girdles,
Also, remember that a Radiant Cut Diamond actually has 8 separate girdles so the EX THICK section may be very small.

Thank you! I feel a bit reassured!

Okay, yours faces up fine compared to a few I looked at, in spite of the very thick girdle. So as long as you like the facet pattern, you're probably okay. Here are a couple for price comps to make sure they are charging you a fair price.

Thank you! Are the facet patterns shown on the GIA reports accurate (I know the profile proportions are not)? The pavilion facets on my Radiant is different than the two you shared.

The facet patterns on the reports are often standard diagrams and do not depict the exact dimensions of a specific stone. It's there more to show the measurements and inclusion plot.

But if your report is showing a different facet pattern, then it probably is a different style cut.
