How does the girdle effect the diamond? thick-verythick? I dont understand also does anyone know where I can find the measurements for the crow of a diamond? is it on the gia report? Thanks for your help

Also is depth a huge issue? I found one with adepth of 70% and a table of 67%

On rounds at least, the desired girdles are thin, medium, or slightly thick. Extremely thin is prone to chipping, and thick or extremely thick means excess weight is at the girdle and may make the stone face up smaller. For rounds, you see the crown measurement (and other measurements) on the diamond diagram on the GIA certificate.

If a girdle is overly thin, the stone might be more prone to chipping at the girdle. THis is not a 100% case, but an important consideration in chipping damage potential.

If a girdle is overly thick, there will be hidden weight, weight which you will be asked to pay for, that is more or less invisible. A wearer tends to see the diameter, the lenght and width of the diamond, but rarely sees the depth. No one will be impressed by a thick girdle''s appearance, or by extra depth. People will see proper diameter as being larger than in a stone where the weight is hidden in the needless extra depth.

Sometimes a cutter must cut a diamond with a thick or very thick girdle to make the best financial choice. It may not be the best diamond for you to select, but someone who knows less will like the way the weight sounds and never realize they are making a less well informed choice.

With girdles my main advice is to stay away from the extremes. Extremely thin leading to easy chipping and extremely thick hiding carat weight in the girdle that you are going to pay for but not see. Also in a round a depth of 70 is extremely deep, allowing for a loss of light return back to you and hiding also hiding a lot of carat weight in the bottom of the stone as well. Crown measurement can be seen on the GIA reports on the diagram of the stone but that is only for round diamonds as well.

Let us start with first questions first.

You are not talking about round brilliants, are you? With a depth of 70%, you clearly are not.

So, before we give any answer, we need to know which shape that you are talking about.

on his other threads, he is referring to an emerald....

If this is an emerald, a higher depth% does not necessarily mean that the stone has less spread. An emerald has several pavilion angles, as well as several crown angles, and there are combinations to hide weight, which do not affect the depth, while there are also combinations to have a high depth% with a good spread.

Talking about crown, you can obtain a crown height by taking a measurement (like Sarin, OGI, Helium). The info is not on the GIA report for an emerald. Crown angles (considering that there are probably 3) are even more difficult. A measuring-machine can also give you the answers, but they are not necessarily exact in their measurement.

Live long,
