I purchased this with the intention of gifting it but once I received it, I have a difficult time parting from it, knowing that I might only see it again once or twice a year. The stone is nothing great but the setting is fantastically superb. It's quite loose even when worn on the second finger of my right hand. The workmanship is excellent and the milgrain is extremely fine and even.

Would you be happy keeping a stone that's "not great".

Would the person getting it appreciate the stone more than you will?

Will you feel bad if the person sees it and really loves it?

Sounds like you should keep it - I would hate for you to gift it and then long to have it back, especially when the intended receiver can't long for what they don't know they might have received! :twirl:
Could you remove the stone and find another setting for it to gift and then place a different stone in this setting for yourself?

And by the way forgot to say I think it's lovely, so-so stone or not! :)

I assume the potential giftee doesn't know about this forum?

Good luck with your decision as the best intentions can fall by the wayside when reality marches in..........

Yes, because I did not pay a lot for the ring.

The intended recipient knows extremely little about coloured stones but loves blingy jewellery.

Quite the opposite. I would be delighted if she loves it as much as I do.

I thought about this and am reluctant for a few reasons:
1. The stone is bezeled so I would have to destroy the stone to set a new stone in the setting to minimize the risk of damaging the setting.
2. The workmanship is so good that I am reluctant to have to redo the very fine and even bezel and milgrain.
3. I know the recipient loves blingy jewellery so to remove the stone and find another setting defeats the purpose of buying this ring in the first place.

Well then Chrono, seems you have your answer!

The workmanship and milgrain do look stunning, and if you could save the bezel and replace it with a stone you were happy with, then it would be another cool project.

However, your friend should absolutely love it. Maybe just confirm they like the color red - to put your mind at ease ;)) The ring is rather elegant and crisply beautiful - and receiving something so nice as a gift can make a day/week/or year. Just hope it is as appreciated as many viewers find it on here.

Otherwise you'd have to keep it and enjoy it.

One of those rare Win-Win's. :twirl:

Will you wear it often enough to make it worth keeping? You've mentioned that you keep some of your higher ticket rings in a vault...would you like to wear this ring because there's no as much concern about losing/damaging it? Would you be able to find one your like as much as a casual ring to wear?

Could you tell us if this setting is one of a kind? I have a jade cab that I would love to put in a setting like that.

It is quite a dilemma but I'd keep :saint: ;))

I think its just gorgeous, and that the stone is really nice too. Is it a ruby? I vote keep, unless the recipient is your mother, in which case I would absolutely gift it to her.

I have an idea, just sell it to me. :naughty:

Seriously, you may want to look for a gem cab that would look nice in that setting. Is it a fairly calibrated size setting?

Copy it, with better stone this time, I am sure with the current technology everything is possible, if not better.

I think it's an awesome ring - if I were hesitating and even thought to post the questions, it would suggest to me that I should hold onto it and, at least, hold onto it for long enough to think about it more. If you never think to wear it, then yes, absolutely gift it, but if you do think about wearing it or do wear it - keeper all the way. If the potential recipient had no idea - no harm, no foul - It is a beautiful ring and definitely worthy of wear :)

Looks amazing on you, keep.

I would keep it, however, it would make a very nice gift indeed.

DK :))

I haven't a clue. This is an estate piece and I have not seen anything like this before, if that counts for anything.

I think it is; it measures 7 x 5.62 mm thereabouts. The finger coverage is amazing though, as you can see, at 19 x 12.5 mm in 18k gold.

Yes, and yes. I'm definitely leaning towards gifting it to my mum as I think this would simply stun her in a good way.

Gift it. Putting something that lovely and generous out in the universe will no doubt come back to you in spades.

I agree with this - with the caveat that you should perhaps see if it's up her alley in its specifics, first, if only because I have once-too-often given something I've thought of as a great treasure to a friend or loved one, only to be sheepishly informed at some later point that it had been regifted because it wasn't their style. I mean, it's still better than the people who give things back to you with a faintly sniffy air because of "bad karma" or the like (swear-to-god, that actually happened ... and if was my own mother), but ... these days, I try to dodge the whole thing in its entirety.

P.S. - That is a stunningly fabulous, impeccably crafted, utterly delicious ring.

gift it....
.... to me!!!

JK. But seriously, that piece is gorgeous. I don't mind the so so stone AT ALL. It's just part of the piece. I sort of believe there are no bad stones, just stones for different purposes. And this one looks great where is it.

But DO gift it... I bet whomever you give it to will be less picky (aka less educated, but you know...) about the stone than you are. It'll knock her socks off!

I didn't realize it was for your mom. I would totally give it to my mom.

Gorgeous! I would totally give it to my mom so that everyone once in a while, I could borrow it. :naughty: :naughty: :naughty:
