After reading the survey/study posted by PS(which i think is great!). I was wondering how many of you had your stone appraised and the color grade turned out to be different.
Was it higher/better than GIA or Same as GIA or Worse than GIA
I know it is tempting to simplify things, but GIA is not ALWAYS correct. It is more useful to ask if an independent grader had a strong different opinion of a color versus a GIA applied grade. GIA itself warns people that their report is an opinion and not carved in stone, fact. The key is that there are "different" grades given by legitimate graders on about 35% of stones when human eyes are the source of the grade using master diamonds. Even GIA blessed master diamond color grading sets have different grades sometime. Its an imperfect science, but we are dealing with extremely fine differences between grades.
I think usually GIA is pretty reliable for color, as is AGS.
The one that comes to mind is Harriet''s stone coming up a different color in the appraisal, but I don''t know if hers was GIA or not. There is a long thread about it somewhere, but I think that''s the exception rather than the norm...
