Does anyone know how to tell where a GIA stone was certified? Is there a meaning to the serial numbers ?

They intentionally make it hard to tell by the number where it was graded.
The numbers are shared around the world.
They are probably using a cloud based system to assign numbers to the various labs in small blocks is my guess.
They could even be doing it on a number by number basis but small blocks make more sense.

As Karl states GIA intentionally conceals information pertaining to which lab the diamond is graded in to preserve anonymity and prevent any attempts to game their system.

In fact, even as a submitter, that the lab you submit to may or may not be the lab that actually does the grading!

This is all for the purposes of security, work flow, and to eliminate any potential for fraud.
