I brought an old mine brilliant diamond (3 carats) to the GIA for a lab report and to issue a certificate. Recently, I called the GIA office to ask about the status on the lab report...While the agent was describing my diamond, she stated that it's a 45 degree angle cut. Is GIA identify old mine cut as a 45 % degree angle cut or old mine brilliant? I'm confused because the girdle is roundish-square (or roundish-rectangle) similar to a cushion-shaped and its lumpy with a high top crown. Do you think GIA made a mistake by describing the diamond as a 45% angle cut instead of old mine brilliant.

I've learned that an old mine cut brilliant is basically like a modern brilliant only in different proportions and was originally known as the 'triple cut' . A modern brilliant ends in a sharp point "the cutlet" as for an old miner or the cutlet has been polished of... just has my diamond has a flat cutlet. Please help me in this matter! I have to pick the diamond next week! Thanks a lot!

That is probably referring crown angle not the shape of the cut.

can you post some pictures of the diamond?

What GIA office did you call?
GIA Laboratory has has not used the term Old Mine Cut as a shape description in over 20 years or longer.
To my knowledge graders do not discuss diamonds with consumers and trade, GIA only issues a grading report.

Old Mine Cuts do not have round outlines.

I called the GIA's office to ask if it's ready for pick up. After, I gave the job number to the agent while he was simply describing it to me then he mentioned in the description the that my diamond is a "45% angle cut" instead of an old mine brilliant. I'm not familiar to the GIA's terminology and I got confused.

At this time, the stone is not in my possession. Therefore, I can't take a picture of it. I'll include some pictures next week.

Thank you so much for all your kind replies!

My stone has a similar pattern.

A 45 degree gauge was used for cutting and grading diamonds back in diamond history.
My guess is you have a later version of a diamond cut/designed using one.
I paged someone with some pictures of gauges.
