We were at a Diamond shop today and they said that after like 2001 all GIA diamonds over 1 ct had to be inscribed with the number on the GIA report and on our report under DIAMOND GRADING REPORT it says May 12, 2003 so should''nt my diamond be inscribed?? I don''t know, I just felt like we got ripped off with this diamond. I really want to take it back but I know I''m screwed considering my husband bought the ring at the end of June of this year.

Marquetta,

First off try to relax

I know you must be going through the motions of having a lot of anxieties right now but there are more questions and info we need to know.

Does the diamond have a GIA certificate that accompanied the diamond when your husband purchased it?

Have you had access to a microscope to view the laser inscription on the girdle?

The Pricescope crew is going to help you figure this out...

Hi Again Princesscut,

There is another way to identify your diamond besides the inscription whether it exist on your diamond or not...

There should be a diagram or plot on your GIA certificate which shows the location and type of the inclusions which are unique to your stone. If you can get access to a microscope or find a reputable jeweler you can have them help you compare the plot on the GIA report to the inclusions which are present in your stone. Inclusions and placement of where those inclusions are present are like fingerprints which are unique to each diamond...

What kind of diamond shop were you at? A jewelry store?

I think they are incorrect. I haven't heard this, and just appraised a GIA certified 1.32 today that had no laser inscription.

Hi Princesscut...

Here is the diagram on your GIA report I was reffering to...

Richard gives sound advice..

(Princesscut) When I read your original paragraph I too was puzzled because this was new to me...I think inscription is optional, not mandated by GIA nor by any standards they have set...

Thanks for all of your replies!

Yes the diamond was accompanied by a GIA report however, when we were at the jewelry store they showed us a GIA report that stated just above the diagram that the GIA report # was inscribed. My GIA report doesnt state that at all. We looked at our diamond through a microscope at the store last night but we didnt have the GIA report with us so we couldnt really compare it to the GIA report. The store manager who seemed to be very knowleable about diamonds explained to us that after 2001 all of the GIA diamons over a carat had to have the laser inscription in them. But he also stated that ours could have been in a vault for years before they even made that rule. This was not the store that my husband purchased the diamond from. It was purchased from a very reputable store in oklahoma. I just hope we didnt get ripped off!

"after like 2001 all GIA diamonds over 1 ct had to be inscribed with the number on the GIA report"

The above is not a true statement.

I love it when so called "knowledgeable jewelers" open their mouths and let anything come out. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of knowledgeable jewelers out there but there are a lot more that are not.

You were not ripped off, so relax.

Marquetta,

Relax. The store manager is neither knowledgeable nor honest. He is blowing smoke in your face. There is no GIA directive that states that all GIA graded diamonds over 1 ct are to be inscribed with the GIA report.

GIA inscribes the diamond at the request of the customer/vendor/dealer that submitted the diamond with personal messages/brand name or GIA report number.
