Hi,

Attached is the GIA report of a diamond I put on hold. The date issued is Aug 8 2008. I didn't attach Jon's helium of this diamond cos I don't know how to attach a adobe file that can open straight away. Anyway, helium was done on Aug 20 2008.

Another diamond that I bought earlier this year from GOG had its GIA report and helium done on the same date. They're twins!!! I happily checked both reports on GIA's website. Of course, for the other diamond, the dtae issued remained as Aug 8 2008 on GIA's website. But for this 1.02L, the report on GIA has date issued on Aug 26 2008 (pic in 2nd post cos I don't know how to attach more than 1 pic per post).

I'm curious, so did GOG send it for grading, got it back for helium and send it back again for regrading?
or
Did GIA made a typo on the 2nd report?

From the looks of it, GIA had to do double work. Once for the report that I'll get (Aug 8), once for the one on the website (Aug 26). They should have a system where once they key in for the formal report, the other gets uploaded immediately so they needn't replicate work.

Oh, btw, diamond's here: http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/4771 (Will start a thread to gather opinions on this diamond)

Gia will not issue a second report for the same diamond they will just reprint the report if it was already graded by them. They can tell by the crystal lattice if it is the same stone or not. Each crystal has unit cell dimensions which are unique for every stone. I am not sure how GIA does it with diamonds but I know with my lab grown crystals the crystallographer I use can tell if that stone already exists in the scientific database and will not duplicate the work if it matches any other crystal submitted by anyonelse.

As for the dates I suspect that the date on the report check is wrong or entered in their database differently as the day they put it into their system. You can ask Jon but there is no reason to submit a stone for regrading as GIA won''t change the grade. It is more likely it was graded by GIA on the 8th and then helium scanned by GOG afterwards on the 20th. No problem to worry about in any case.

CCL

Hi CCL, thanks for the response.

Glad to know they aren''t doing duplicate work. I was thinking they forgot to do the informal website report, got GOG to send them the stone again so that they can re-grade. If so, I rather scan them the formal report instead of sending the stone back to them. Ok, I''m just talking about efficiency, hope I make sense.

Hi Ashleigh

Best to just ask Jon, he will be able to clear this up in a tick!

Actually, a diamond can be resubmitted, and possibly get a different grade. I don''t think it happens often, but it can happen.

http://www.diamonds.net/auction/Info_For_Buyers.aspx

Rapaport guarantees that each diamond will match
the accompanying GIA grading report. Buyers may
resubmit the diamond to GIA as a new stone within
60 days of delivery. If the diamond receives a different
size, color, clarity or cut grade, it may be returned to
Rapaport for a full refund including the cost of the re-grading
by GIA

Hi, the different dates have no impact on purchase decision. Just want to know if GIA is efficient.
