i have stone and looking to have it set in a simple white gold, solitare, 4 prong. dont have it yet although many options on net and in b&m stores.

1. any benefit from buying from b&m store? how much more should i expect to spend on such a setting?

2. if stone happens to be damaged during setting, is it the owners responsibility to replace or does the setter have insurance that covers it.

3. can i have the name of 1 or 2 insurers that would insure a lose stone?

As far as I know, Jewelers Mutual is the only insurer who will insure a loose stone. All jewelers sell simple 4 prong tiffany style settings. I would choose a very nice jewelry store to set my stone (as in not a chain/mall store). You'll probably need to get the insurance because most jewelers won't cover a stone they did not sell. There is no reason to get the setting online. That would mean sending your stone somewhere to be set, and there is no reason to do that when you want a setting everyone carries.
