i just wanted to post this for anyone who is thinking about adopting a pet from a shelter!

I believe that at some shelters ALL adoptions that day will be free

Definitely want to second the message as well - so many lovely pets pass through shelters and never even get a chance - if you can find it in your heart, please consider giving one or more of these precious creatures a home.

I have two precious darlings from shelters, I would have many more if I could. If I hear of anyone I know who is looking to get a pet, I always try to encourage them to look at adopting from a shelter.

Our shelter kitty, Coco, came to live with us on February 26, 2008 and we couldn''t love her more than we already do. DH is totally smitten with her. She''ll be 5 this year and we are so happy to have her as a member of our family.

PLEASE adopt shelter furbabies, if possible!

my doggie was a shelter dog too (she's a purebread vizsla and crrrraaazzzzyyyy - sometimes i can't believe people would spend that much $$ on a dog AND THEN surrender them - amazing - their loss, my gain and i wouldn't have it any other way

shelters get such bad raps ... you don't know what type of dog you are getting, their personality, people want a puppy. we've heard it all right?

my first hand knowledge - shelter dogs have been the best, overwhelmingly loveable, and most wonderful animals.. it's like they know they got a second lease on life!

i'm trying to convince DH to adopt a cat on the 24th. i've never had a cat before, i don't think DH cares for them, but there are so so so so so many in the shelters right now.... black dogs too... apparently they are the least adoptable dogs .. i was talking to my friend who is the executive director of our shelter and just last month alone they had to put down 80 dogs - most black lab mixes... so sad, so sad!

... so my next dog will be a goofy black lab mix

I have a goofy black lab mix rescue dog. I love him. The thing that drives me crazy is that if I drop my hairbrush on the floor or crumple up foil or toss something on the bed he skittishly runs away. He's getting less alarmed but it makes me sad as to why he has that reaction. At first when I'd take him to my parent's house he'd just bark and bark at anyone who entered the room for about 15 seconds. Now he barely lifts his head up. They just need a loving trusting home. They deserve it, too.

What a fabulous way to bring a furbaby home!!!

There are such wonderful pets, just waiting to find a loving forever home, at shelters!

All of our furbabies have been rescues, 3 adopted from shelters and 3 strays and they have been great additions to our family.

I do not understand the need to spend hundreds or thousands of $$$ on a designer or pure bread pet---there is already such an over population of animals, why not find a wonderful animal at a shelter and help out the situation! You can even find pure breads at shelters!!!

OK off my high horse, I am just very passionate about this subject!

OOh - good luck Italia, I''ll keep my fingers crossed for you! We had the cutest chi-mix puppies at the shelter a couple of weeks ago - they were so tiny they kept escaping their enclosure - too cute!

One of mine was clearly abused before and was super skiddish when we got him. It will take a long time to rehabilitate him, but it''s totally worth the time and effort.

Awww, now I want another furbaby! My two shelter kitties are the most loving, sweet creatures I''ve ever encountered. Ezra, the goofy guy in my avatar, likes to curl up on the couch right next to me and put his head on my lap to be scratched.

My shelter babies have made a huge difference in my life, and have definitely made me a better person. I hope more people see this thread and get to experience the same thing!

2 of my 3 babies are rescues (the oldest was from a neighborhood litter and before I was more informed - I would never get a dog through another "backyard breeder" ever again). One is a purebred Chihuahua and the other is a potluck-mix chihuahua. Both from petfinder. The mix, Skeeter, was surrendered to animal control in rural Georgia to be put down because "he was getting too old." He''s about 7, and the most quirky, loving, personable, wonderful dog I could imagine owning. I can barely even talk about what could have happened to him if the folks at animal control didn''t see some bit of potential in him and funneled him to the humane association away from doggie death row. It breaks my heart to think about all the dogs that didn''t get the chance Skeeter did.

Our other rescue baby, Jefe, is the love of my life! (well, aside from my husband of course!!).

All mine have been non-shelter rescues... most recent showed up at work and tried to sneak inside all day, matted, skinny and dirty with a leaky eyeball. Finally someone told me about him, I opened the door and he darted in so fast. Spent the day cruising around the furniture in the basement. I called all sorts of no-kill shelters, but since he had a leaky eye they all said he might potentially be put down if it wasn''t an easy fix. So, long story short, he''s now third cat and the other kittyboy Rat loves him to bits. The leaky eye was never fixable- we even got him plastic surgery for it!- but the vet felt he had had some sort of "trauma" (probably a kick) to the eye as a kitten and it had healed all wrong... it''s been better since the surgery but it was such HELL for both of us, I can''t quite bring myself to try again yet. He''s named O.P. ("Opie") for Orange Problem.

It took him about two years to stop freaking out over black boots- he''d see one on the floor and scoot sideways at it- and doing that sad Collapsing Kitteh thing where reach down to pet, they don''t see your hand coming, and they just slink down to the ground. He hasn''t done that in forever, thank god, it broke my heart.

Oh, yeah, and the bullet in his neck was not good either. He had a .22 under the skin of his neck, which the vet removed for us and I saved. How he survived that, I dunno.

It sure is true that rescues know they have a second lease on life and are the sweetest ever- Rat, whom we got with his sister as a "free kitten" rescue some 12 yrs ago, never realized how good he has it! O.P., on the other hand, sure does.

My mom needs kitten. And puppy. I''ll probably go with her to a shelter sometime this month; it''s soooo hard not to want to take another one home, but three is too many kitties for my little apartment already.

It''s so cool to see how many people here have rescue critters!

OMG Gossamer, Jefe is just ADORABLE! love the Tiffany tag - I''m obsessive about my kitties collars (they have one for every month) but I think DH would die if I came home with Tiffany charms for them (but the idea wheel is turning!).

I just got back from volunteering at my local no-kill shelter - I spent my time just sitting in the FIV+ room with the kitties and soaking up all their love. If I could adopt all of them, I would. It''s so heartbreaking to see them and know they have such slim chances of ever leaving the shleter - while heartwarming to sit and hear their purrs.
