My man and I have been looking at rings and I found one I really liked with a gemstone in the middle. Cool thing is it is his birthstone. My question is... is it weird to buy a ring that isnt your traditional engagement/wedding set with diamonds and get a gemstone. We are trying to move into a new house and with the economy we arnt making alot of money cause we have commision only jobs. I cant really find anything for under 800 that I like. What should I do?

That''s not weird at all - it''s done all the time. And it''s especially cool that it''s his birthstone!
Your engagement ring can be whatever you as a couple want it to be - colored gemstone, diamond, plain band with no stone, eternity band - the options are endless.
Heck, you don''t even need a ring at all (but it''s nice to have SOMETHING to symbolize your commitment).

The only requirement is to post pictures

Congrats on your engagement!

Also, I just wanted to throw out there that I did a quick search on whiteflash and goodoldgold and they do have some round diamonds available in the .40 ct range that come in right under and around the $800 range.

I don''t know specifically what you are looking for as far as shape and whatnot. Also, I don''t want to make it sound like I''m pushing diamonds at you if what you really want is a gemstone. Just wanted to make you aware that some of the reputable online vendors you can find here have way better prices than you see at the mall stores.. so if you really did want to go the traditional "diamond ring" route then you may actually be able to do so with your budget.

Either way, PS is definitely the place to get educated!!

Thanks!! As soon as it gets on my finger I will post it. I figured since it is so hard for me to find anything I like and we both really like this ring it would be the one. I think it is really cool that it is his birthstone 2. I have only owned one other ring in my whole life and its just a plaining little sterling silver ring so the ring buying experiance is a little over whelming.

Congrats! When you get it, be sure to head over to the Colored Stones board too - we''d love to see it and congratulate you on more on what i''m sure is a beautiful ring

What stone is it?

Actually, in the Victorian times, gems were very popular, especially pearls (represented purity), garnets, amethysts, and a slew of others! As a matter of fact, some rings had multiple stones, lined up in the following order:

Diamond
Emeralds
Amethyst
Ruby
Emerald
Sapphire
Topaz

Now, take a look...see what it spells?

What is the actual gemstone in the ring you like? The reason I ask is because durability of the stone should be something you consider. Diamonds, sapphires, and rubies are all hard enough for daily wear (Mohs hardness of 10 and 9). You would have to be extremely careful with softer stones.

I have a sapphire center stone in my e-ring and I wouldn''t have it any other way - I love it!

Ditto. If it''s another type of stone you will need to be VERY careful with it if you want to wear it daily.

that''s really neat!

Come on over to the Coloured Stones forum. You''ll get loads of help there.

I''m not overly familiar with Moh''s, but I did a quick search for quartz. It looks like it comes in at a 7. The was curious because I''ve been wearing an amethyst everyday for nearly 20 years and it still looks fine. Now, I''m sure it wasn''t top-quality to begin with, but I still think it looks beautiful. When I look really closely at it (maybe 5-6 inches from my eyes) I do see a few tiny, shallow scratches. I have definitely NOT taken any special care with this ring. So, I just wanted to throw that out there. I know you''ll be able to find lots of very helpful info on ps, especially in the colored stones pages, but I guess what I''m trying to say is if your heart is set on a softer stone, it may not necessarily be a bad idea. Again, I am NOT an expert, but just wanted to share with you my personal experience. (FYI: My stone IS set very low so it probably doesn''t get bumped around as much as others.)

wowwww that IS really cool!!! love it!

I think it''s a cool idea-added bonus it''s his birthstone! I found Pricescope while searching on the internet for a new engagement ring-I wanted a diamond. Then I started browsing here and have since changed my mind and am going to have a colored gemstone instead!

This is one of the sweetest things I''ve ever heard. I love it!

Outside of the US gemstone erings are popular, especially in Europe. I think they are fabulous!

I dont honestly believe there are any set rules when it comes to engagement rings...it''s what feels best to you.

But, when it comes to working with a fixed budget, then things get complicated. Diamonds are expensive, and while you may finding some settings with diamonds for under $800.00, they may not be what you were hoping for.

A lot of women seem to get "in the mean time" settings--usually very plain/simple with the intention to upgrade at a better time financially. That is always something you can consider. Traditional solitare settings in wg or gold are usually very reasonable, and lovely just because they are so classic.

Good luck, and best wishes.

Not weird at all. I know several ladies that have BEAUTIFUL non-diamond engagement rings.
The important thing is your love, and being together. The accessories are just a bonus!
:)

Now weird at all! It''s actually quite practical, because you can get more bang and color for your buck with gemstones. The color choices are endless! Princess Diana had a sapphire e-ring.

You can also get a high-quality gemstone eternity band in gold or palladium.

Thritto. Google the MOHs scale to check where your gem lines up, and treat it with appropriate care!

its an emerald and i really like the setting....heres the catch we found it at zales and it is only 600.00....we know nothing about rings except that it is the only one i like that is in our price range. why spend so much on a ring when i can spend it on the house? he said later if i want to take out the emerald and put a diamond we could do that 2.

Please be careful about choosing an emerald - they are fragile and fairly easy to break. It''s certainly not a 24/7 type of stone.

Beautiful stones... but yes, very fragile.

what about a white sapphire? It has the ''diamond'' look without the diamond price tag...

This site is popular for that exact reason...they have many settings for you to choose from as well...

But sadly without the fire and sparkle that a diamond has. Beautiful stones in their own right - but definitely not a diamond substitute.

Why don''t you come over to the Coloured Stones section and we can all help you find something beautiful in your budget.

Lots of us have coloured e-rings because we prefer coloured stones and there are lots of incredible rings to see over there.
