I''m just barely becoming aware of the GEM Advisor & Holloway Cut Advisor. Tell me though, how important are these and do they really need to be used in order to determine if a diamond should be bought or not?

They are both handy pieces of software.

The Holloway Cut Adviser is a rejection (as opposed to selection) tool for round brilliants only.

Gem Adviser is a complements DiamCalc and allows you to "view" a stone using a .gem generated from DiamCalc, so it''s kind of like an add-on to DiamCalc.

If you are using either for a round brilliant based on the proportions from a cert, then neither will tell you the optical symmetry of a diamond, nor other "tricks" such as girdle painting or digging. Therefore, in the ideal situation, you''d want extra info such as full Sarin data and/or an Ideal-Scope image to make your final selection.

DiamCalc is useful for princess cuts and asscher cuts and version 3 can estimate the new AGS grade as well.

I think that looking with your eyes is the best way to pick a diamond, however they are great tools for weeding out diamonds when you're shopping, especially online.

Bee can you look in 5 different stores with different lighting on 2 different days and pick the best diamond every time?

So true, Garry!

Brandon, if you are looking at cushions, the HCA is not for those. It is for round brilliants. Cushions have to be seen.

Gem adviser is most effective and ASET photo''s will help

Thanks for the tips guys. So I should still pay attention to what the Gem Advisor is telling me on cushion cuts?
