Help, I'm trying to buy a ring, I've already started the process, the diamond has been located, I'm about the make the downpayment, and suddenly after a bit of research (maybe spending too much time browsing here), I'm a little worried.

I'm looking at the attached ring and I've been given the following 2 choices (for roughly the same amount):

SI1, G, 1.01ct
SI1, J, 1.15ct

I choose the J, thinking bigger is better and if it is in the near colorless range I wouldn't be able to see any yellow, but now I'm having second thoughts and thinking I should choose the other one before it's to late.

The diamond is cushion cut. Is .14ct a noticeable difference? Will it look yellow compared to the surrounding diamonds? If you can't see it from the sides does the color matter?

Most importantly, am I over-thinking this?

I have some bigger pictures, if it helps.

Me personally, I'd rather have the G. It's a very small difference in size but a bigger jump in color.

depends on the cost difference as well, I don't really start to notice a size difference until about 1.20 in a Round brillant (1ct vs 1.20ct). What shape are you getting? some fancies have varying face up differences that may or may not be too noticeable for its carat weight, so I don't necessarily look at ctw perse, but dimensions when it comes to fancy and optics.

ETA: and if its a cushion, I love warmer stones, but how bout you? cushion or other fancy shapes tend to show color a weee bit more.

Have you seen these stones in person? If not, the 1.15 is not necessarily bigger than the 1.01. Their certificates should state their length and width measurements.

I'm assuming you are looking at cushions given the ring image. Some cushions are very deep, or have a high crown height. Carat weight refers to how heavy the stone is, which may not translate to how large it looks.

Have you seen a J in person? Some people like the lower color in cushions (a more antique feel), but if you have a modern cushion, generally people prefer higher colors.

But first, since size seems to be the main concern - check what the L x W measurements are. Then, go see some J's in different lighting conditions (by a window, under a table/hand, etc.) and see if the color bothers you. Only you can say whether or not it does.

All else being completely equal I would get the G color. You want a halo and so I think a more colorless stones is a better option. Also, if you halo both diamonds, I bet you good money that you would not be able to see the extra carat weight once set and haloed. halos are a great size equalizer (they add like 2mm in diameter which really decreases the % increase in diamond size, KWIM?)

BUT have you read up on cushion cuts and selecting a winner? There are a lot of poopy cut diamonds out there.

Normally I would say for a solitaire setting, go with the large J stone.... If a slight tint doesn't bother you this is a great option.

Since you are getting a halo- the 1.01 G will still feel larger because of the halo surrounding it. Also if the melee is higher in color in the J it may give the J a more tinted look since the difference in performance and size will make the melee look whiter than their grade.

Also, check the proportions- the L and W ratio and actuall size may be negligible. Maybe one stone is a few mm longer, but the width is the same, etc. so think about how the stone sizes actually prepare to each other.

For a halo setting, I'd definitely go with the G assuming the cut quality is the same for both stones. The halo will add extra size that you won't necessarily miss with a smaller stone.

I agree with what has been said.

If it were a solitaire I would go with the J, but with the halo I would go with the G.

I'll chime in with another vote for the G. I think you'll be much happier with that color and a halo.

I would choose the G, especially for a halo.

I agree.

I'm voting for the G as well.

Check with the vendor to see what color the Pave/Melee stones are. Because the stones are so close together with a halo setting, you'll want to minimize color difference.

Ditto on preferring the G, especially in a halo.
