Hi,

Newbie here with yet another question about fluorescence and color grading. I remember reading a post here saying AGS graded color and fluorescence differently than GIA. To be specific, the post said AGS grades diamonds in the absence of UV light whereas GIA grades diamonds with the presence of UV light. Because fluorescence can make a diamond look whiter than it actually is, my question is if I were thinking about buying a J color diamond graded by AGS, will this diamond be graded higher in color if it were graded by GIA due to the presence of UV light? All opinions and comments welcome. Thanks!

Well, yes, there is a theoretical chance that could happen (and one that I, too, have certainly considered myself in the past), but AGS uses uv filtered light and for GIA just uses (for lack of a better term - hopefully someone else will chime in with the correct terminology) nonfiltered more ambient type light (they don't specifically add fluoro for grading) which does not have much fluoro in it anyway. So in reality I believe it is really unlikely. I am not an expert though, so let's see what everyone else has to say!

Ditto - good question!

Most welcome! It would be interesting to see what we can find out!

Wow thanks Angeline! That was some good reading and that answers my question perfectly!
