Okay boys and girls this is really fun. My friend has a 6.6 gorgeous pear that she has been wearing for 20 years. Although it is gorgeous she has always coveted EC, and she wants to trade her pear for an EC of similar size.

Believe it or not it is not certified. So this week the stone is going to GIA.

So here is the help. She lives in NJ has access to New York. Who of our PS vendors should she go to for an EC of that size. Also she will have to sell or trade in her pear for the EC.

Please also give me stone suggestions as well as Vendor suggestions.

PS she is happy to buy this EC today or next year meaning she is willing to wait for the perfect stone.

GOG or ERD.

We need pictures ;) lol

I second GOG...does your friend have money to add to the pot? I think the way its going to work is that she is going to have
to add money to stay in the 5-7 carat range...just a guess though.

Here is a pretty EC

Closer to 5 carats but faceting not so sure about ...
http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/emerald-cut/5.07-carat-e-color-vs2-clarity-sku-97338 $136k
Here is a J but it has something right on the table :?

Here is the most expensive pear at JA right now for comparisons sake. Not very pretty

She should talk to GOG about putting her stone up for consignment...or see how much GOG would offer to buy it for
if she were to buy an EC through them.

heidi, does she know what is the perfect stone for her? Because of the many different step cuts/faceting patterns within the broad "emerald" category, ECs are far from homogenized. So even if, say, 5 ECs are objectively equal, 2 of them may appeal to her more than the other 3.

Sounds as if she's been out of the diamond market for years. So it seems it would make most sense for her, at this juncture, to simply get her feet wet by looking at various ECs to get a better feel for what she likes best, where she is willing to compromise (assuming the sky is not the limit, budget-wise). In other words, not limit her browsing to ECs in the 5 - 7 carat category.

Plus, even in NYC, vendors aren't holding boatloads of loose 5 - 7 ct diamonds, especially ECs, in their in-house inventory for immediate viewing; transactions at this level are more commonly accomplished by calling in stones "on memo" (which will be easier for her, and whomever she ends up working with, once she has a more particularized vision of her perfect stone). E.g., Engagement Rings Direct has only 1 at hand (a 5.14 ct, I-VVS2, but even they are saying the cut is simply Good, so listing it for $79,922); Diamonds by Lauren also has just 1 EC (a 5.36, D-VVS1 listed at $279,850); ID Jewelry, Leon Mege/Perry Chen and Good Old Gold (on Long Island, GOG is about an hour's drive from midtown Manhattan) have none; can't tell from the web site how many ECs James Allen actually has on hand at their NYC location.

Looks as if B2C has several, outsized ECs in-house & is expecting more on May 18; she could call them & make an appointment for after that date (and confirming the expected delivery before she traipses into the City). And also meet with others for broader purposes, i.e., to develop a basis of comparison vis-à-vis the trade-in & deciding upon whom she'd like to work with.

GOG because Jon and his staff have an eye for weeding out the dud ones, Grace at Jewels by Grace to be on the look out for a gorgeous Antique cut one when she goes to Vegas soon, ditto for Erica at Love Affair Diamonds and Victor to see if he could source her a decent looking one, he has a pretty decent eye for stones as well....

Re: Fun Project help my friend turn 6.6 Pear into a 5-7 cara

Adding Adam at OWD to the list--he may be able to find an antique EC and take her trade in at the same time.

Re: Fun Project help my friend turn 6.6 Pear into a 5-7 cara

She loves my emerald cut so I think she has an idea. We first have to have her stone returned from GIA and figure out how to sell hers. ERD is more convenient especially if she is dropping the stone off in the same building. I also think that Jonathan at GOG will walk her through show her videos et al. I think she will have to add money to the EC although I think going from 6.6 to 5+ in EC may or maynot be equvilent. I try to keep her above J ....of course its all about the steps which is why GOG and ERD are good starting points.

I will tell her to stop at ERD when she drops off her stone next week or two.

Thanks you'll I have aphoto of her pear now just couldn't find it in my photos will post when I can.

Re: Fun Project help my friend turn 6.6 Pear into a 5-7 cara

It might be worth her while mentioning it for sale here in the preloved section once it is certified, you never know there could be a P/S member that falls in love with it.

Re: Fun Project help my friend turn 6.6 Pear into a 5-7 cara

Is there a particular reason why you are going to tell her to pay a visit to only ERD when in NYC? Now that Old World Diamonds has moved uptown, the Manhattan purveyors of loose stones who are willing to sell to retail customers are all virtually within spitting distance of GIA & each other (well, there may be some in, e.g., Chinatown, but I've never heard of any recommendations for there).

(In thinking more about this, probably makes more sense for her to hold off on meeting with anyone in the trade -- or contacting, say , GOG via phone or e-mail -- until she has the GIA lab report in hand, as that will result in more meaningful discussions about trade-in pricing).

Re: Fun Project help my friend turn 6.6 Pear into a 5-7 cara

There are quite a few big EC's listed on 1st Dibs right now
http://www.1stdibs.com/jewelry/section/engagement-rings/?q=emerald+cut

This one is 6.05 ct G/VS2 (GIA) for $250K - in NY
http://www.1stdibs.com/jewelry/rings/engagement-rings/emerald-cut-diamond-engagement-ring/id-j_146092/

Or this one - it's a bit more square though
6.56 ct I/VS2 (GIA) for $200K - in NY
http://www.1stdibs.com/jewelry/rings/engagement-rings/square-emerald-cut-diamond-three-stone-engagement-ring/id-j_146086/

How about this one! 7.54 F/IF! :naughty: (GIA) for $525K - this one is in Boston though but might be worth seeing if it's in her budget.

How fun! Keep us posted on what she finds!

Yes Molly I have advised her to make an appointment with Mark or Chris when she drops her ring off to discuss. Then I told her to make an appointment with Jonathan for both consigning her pear and looking for EC. Thanks I am on the same page as everyone who answered me so thank you all so much

sorry just saw youor second post. After being on PS for a couple of years after she gets her GIA I made those suggestions from my expereince here GOG and ERD I am not familiar with the others you were suggesting and she is trusting my instinct

Hey, that's your prerogative. But I took your OP soliciting vendor suggestions at face value. I would not have taken the time to check into the at-hand inventories of Leon Mege/Perry Chen, James Allen, Diamonds by Lauren (none of whom is a stranger to the PS community; they are frequently mentioned and recommended) had I realized there was no point in bothering to do so, that your mind was already made up.

B2C hasn't received as much air play here on PS, but they too are a featured sponsor;
https://www.pricescope.com/featured-sponsors
my late father-in-law, who was in the trade, thought they were decent for retail shoppers who aren't total neophytes; and I did do a quick run through recent PS threads, e.g.,
https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/b2c-jewels-trustworthy.184332/
before adding their name to my list of possibilities for comparative discussions re trade-in, etc.

BTW, Neil Beaty and Dave Atlas (who contribute to the forum under the usernames denverappraiser and Oldminer) wrote an article for posting on PS, How to Sell Your Diamonds: A Guide for Consumers, that's worth reading:
https://www.pricescope.com/wiki/diamonds/how-to-sell-your-diamonds

Re: Fun Project help my friend turn 6.6 Pear into a 5-7 cara

No Molly thank you in fact several you took a lot of time and that Is what I was hoping. After rereading all the posts I will wait until her stone is finished at GIA and will take all the great advice and go forward.

Good reference I sent that how to sell your diamond to my friend (I had read it) but it might be good to see it in writing.
Thanks again all
