From the pawn shop today.
A French silver cicada pin.
It has the boar's head assay mark for .800 silver, and a maker's mark that I have yet to decipher.
A knowledgeable friend from another forum tells me that cicadas are the symbol for Provence, and these brooches are worn by ladies on traditional folk attire.
Anyway, I had to have it! The clasp is broken, so I will secure it with a rubber earring back on the pin part.

Cicadas and the folk dress of the women of Provence is a good idea for a separate study. It would be interesting to know the maker and year of manufacture of this brooch.

I have been trying to research the mark, with no definite success. I *think* it may be John Dupre, and the image may be two dice or a domino, but I'm not sure at all. Researching French marks is tedious, and the references online are not easy to navigate.
This mark is incredibly small and the photo was taken through a 20x loupe.
I may never know who made it.
