I''m trying to find pictures of settings that have four surprise diamonds, if they even exist! My FI and I had a ring custom made and wanted to incorporate the center stone and four small sidestones in his grandmother''s ring, so we had the jeweler set the four sidestones in between the prongs, one on each side. But I don''t like the final product - there''s no open space, it''s all enclosed and looks clunky. So I''m looking for alternative ideas to bring to the jeweler but every ring I''ve seen with surprise diamonds has only two. Is it just not possible to have a surprise diamond on every side without looking clunky?

Here''s one that has 6 I think. It belongs to sunkist and it''s a Lockes solitaire. (I hope sunkist doesn''t mind me posting this...) I know another member had a solitaire made like this with four prongs so I guess that had 4 surprise diamonds...I think it was KristyDarling but I can''t find the picture...

, depending on your surprise diamonds size and also center stone size it might be possible to custom make not too heavy looking ring.
If you don't mind high setting incorporation 4 melees into it should not be a problem.

I made one example rendering for you.

Just another thought, but I have seen where some people have inserted diamonds inside the band of the ring sort of as secret diamonds. I remember reading someone had a pink one in his and a blue one in hers to represent each other. Just another place they could be put.

Thanks for the welcome and ideas! I don''t know the exact size of the diamonds, but here are two not so great pix. There are two small diamonds and two larger diamonds and because of the way the band of the ring is, I''m not sure what would work.

Having them be secret diamonds is something we''ve considered, although I''d love to have them be visible. We also thought about using the diamonds in something other than the ring, but part of me would really like to keep all of the stones together.

it looks like the jeweler did a nice job of doing what you wanted but the diamonds are just too big to be ''surprise'' diamonds. unless you had something like a 5ct. center stone!

are there already diamonds in the band? it almost looks like there could be from the pics. if not, you could use them in the band. you could also use them in a wedding band.

Lol. Definitely not a 5 ct. center stone! Yea, we asked about using the bigger diamonds in the band itself, but the jeweler gave us some spiel about not doing that, maybe the quality of the diamonds weren''t up to his standards, something like that.

At any rate, we''re getting the ring entirely re-done, so hopefully we can come up with some idea of what to do with the extra stones. It''d be easier if we didn''t have them, but there''s a lot of sentimental value in keeping FI''s grandmother''s diamond together in one ring.

I made a photoshop to show that i think may save you re-making the whole ring, just the head.
The prongs are not straight anymore and there 8 of them. This makes room for setting small diamonds much lower than before, closer to the band.

that looks great irina! you may have just solved the problem

i think it''s great that you want to use the heirloom diamonds marycherry, don''t give up!

I think those diamonds are just too large to be "surprise" diamonds incorporated in the head of your e-ring setting. I love the look of small diamonds bezel set flush in a band, like the Tiffany Etoile wedding band (see attached pic). Would you consider using the stones in your wedding band instead of e-ring? I think it would be cool if the wedding band had 5 bezel set stones that alternated small, medium, small, medium, small. You would need to purchase a 5th diamond about the size of the smaller pair you have now (either white or blue -- or a colored gemstone) to use as the center stone. The stones could be placed in a straight line in the center of the band, or zig zag like the Etoile. Just a thought.

That is a nice idea, use them in your wedding band. Also, maybe out them in the shank instead of the head?

Wow, the 8 prong setting looks great, thank you for that excellent idea!!

Dumb question - is it possible to mount the diamonds without the bezels? I think I''ve seen a couple of rings that had the surprise diamonds seemingly floating in ther settings. Don''t know how possible/secure that is. I guess alternatively I could ask for some milgrain on the bezels to ''prettify'' it up a little.

The Etoile band is lovely, but we''ve already picked out my wedding band and are having the e-ring re-designed to match it more closely (which is what we originally tried to do, but now that we will have the actual wedding ring to bring to our jeweler, I think it''ll be easier for him to match it.)
