Hello,

I have a 4.45carat ring with 2 sidestones of.50 each. I LOVE nice things-particularily diamonds but this is too much for me(no I''m not complaining-I acknowledge that I am so very fortunate to have this dilemma but read on please). I am a woman with good but simple taste and this ring is far too ostentatious for me. Its so huge it looks fake!Is it possible to recut it into two smaller diamonds? Or am I better off making something like a pendant with it...
Thanks!

In general its not feasable to make it into 2 diamonds and it would lose a huge amount of value doing so.
A pendant sounds like a nice thing to do with it.

Another vote for a pendant. That would show off the stone really well without looking as showy.

Thanks! I guess that makes sense. And to the woman who just ordered her 4+ carat ring on whiteflash-it is devine!Just out of curiosity..are you going to wear your ring everyday?

I agree that a pendant sounds nice. Another thought would be a new setting that sets the stone as low as possible, maybe with no sidestones to help tone it down but keep it beautiful.

You also may want to check into how well cut it is and have it recut into a sparkling beauty if it is not well cut. (I wouldn't do with with an OMC or OEC tho...) It will lose some weight, but if it is suited to it, could keep it's value and up it's beauty.

Hi,
What do OMC and OEC stand for?I'll have to get the specs for my rock. The low setting without the sidestones is a good idea also!

I would totally have it recut into a smaller, ideal cut stone (if it isn't already)....that you feel comfy wearing !

Are there some jewellers who specialize in recutting? What are some questions I should ask/things to watch out for?

The Eight Star company does this and, on this forum, several diamonds have been recut orr cut on order by a company in Antwerp represented by a really nie guy (by avatar name "Paul-Antwerp").

Stephan (this is his avatar name) had a diamond cut by Paul recently and posted a load on info on the process and outcome

I am not sure how the prices for recutting compare between the two companies. I am sure, however, that .... will give you lots of insight into the process if you so wish (they did so on PS already) and choice of what exactly you accept in terms of weight and size loss if you so wish. Both ways you can definitely get an ideal cut after the strictest receipe at the other end of the pipeline, I would think.

No I will not wear it out every day. Some of my friends will never get to see it because I know it might make them feel uncomfortable.
However I love it and wear it when I am at home because it is something I enjoy. We live in Manhattan and a ring of this size is not so unusual as to attract attention. It was bought to celebrate a special anniversary and I will wear it for special occasions.
I just had a thought. The two half carat side stones might be a bit too much with such a large stone. Before I bought my ring, I tried on stones in the 4 carat range and felt that side stones were more than my finger could handle. You might be happier with a solitaire setting and you can either use the side stones as stud earrings or get a three stone setting with a ruby or sapphire as a center stone with the two .50's as side stones.
I wish you luck in whatever choice you make.
