I''m off to the polls.

AMEN, SISTAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I voted! This morning. But I have to complain...I have registered to vote in this ridiculous state FIVE TIMES, and still my name was NOT in the voter book. I.R.R.I.T.A.T.E.D.
38.gif
I had to cast a provisional ballot. And then, they gave me ANOTHER voter registration form to fill out. Yeah..what...is the sixth time supposed to be a charm?!

GO VOTE!!!

Are the Republicans as busy where you are as they are here in No Cal? I've had four telephone calls in the last hour (it's now 4:40pm) 'reminding' me that there's still time.

Most fun of course, is getting a taped message from our governor... It's like receiving orders from The Terminator!!!

(I guess I'm registered as a Republican, although I haven't voted like one in a LONG time.)

I voted this morning as well. Like widget, my phone has been ringing off the hook. A real PITA. I even had a woman knock on my front door, now that was a bit much!!!

Yep, I voted this morning!

I was registered as a repulican since 1988 until this year when I just couldn''t live with myself a moment longer! Honestly the only reason I ever was one, was to vote in the republican primaries. I couldn''t live with my hypocrisy any longer though... and to console myself I voted for every single tax increase and voted against the tax reduction! Ha!! Libraries, schools, fire, and safety will all thank me :)

Yes, I already voted this morning before work. I put a sign on my office door reminding everyone to vote!

I really don''t care if you vote republican or democrat, what I DO care about is that people exercise their right to vote and inform themselves on the issues/propositions so that they know what they are voting on.

I hate it when I hear people said they voted a la "eennie meennie minie moe" or they just alternate between "yes" and "no" on all the propositions.

Grrr, that''s just a WASTE of a vote!

I'm glad people are getting out there and voting!
Although I swear they've been doing their best to discourage us from voting what with all the ugly and/or pathetic ads and the phone calls. I even unplugged my phone yesterday after all the automated phone calls, and I left my 80lb monster dog on the front porch. *sigh*

The election in my state is a bit depressing. Not only has there been a few real nasty races but they parties are still pointing fingers and screaming at each other on election day! The Dems are saying that the Republicans called non-republican voters and gave them the wrong polling location info ... deliberately of course! (Yesterday they tried to get a court injunction to stop the calls.) And the Republicans are screaming that the democrats intentionally gave republican-heavy precincts too few ballots and no provisional ballots! They're muttering about lawyers. oy vey!

Our state finally gave up on the electronic voting machines and so this is our first paper ballot vote... I think not all of the kinks have been worked out. But it's still better than having the sneaking feeling that your vote just evaporated.

Anyway, here's to all the people who voted today!

yes!! ITA!!! In oregon everyone is vote by mail (I haven''t been to a voting booth for years!) so my husband and I sit down and debate everything and look it up online... and we don''t agree on everything.

apparently here all of the new immigrant citizens in this state were sent letters (falsely) informing them that they could not vote - even though they are citizens!!!!

I''m not American, and I have to admit my confusion and ignorance... What exactly are election midterms?
33.gif

Oh dear, I think I''m about to show my civics ignorance...
I think it refers to the election that happens in the middle of the presidental term. As important as who and what party the president is which party has the majority in the house and senate. Midterm elections are when house and senate seats come up for grabs and the balance of power can shift. So it''s pretty important.

Yeppers

ETA: However, I totally disagree with Rathers sentiment that this is just setting the stage for the election in 2 years... I think that it makes people too noncahlant about the importance of Congress..

well... some offices are held for 2 years, some for 4, some for 6 - the big election years are presidential election years which is every 4 - a lot of offices come up during the presidential election year - and quite a bit of them are held 2 years before/after a presidential election and those are midterm elections, which is what this is. There are elections held EVERY year though, but most of the stuff on the ''off years'' is local.

Indie: We have the same issues here with the mudslinging. I am in the DC/MD/VA area. During an ordinary election season I hate all of the TV ads, but this year was totally out of control. Much of the focus was on finding dirt on the other candidate rather than what the person actually stood for. I am acutally glad that I did not have to vote in at least one of the jurisdictions because there is no way I''d be able to choose between the two candidates. It kind of felt like choosing between the lesser of two evils. Yuck!

So... who are you voting for? The governors? The president? Something else? *is confused because Canadians have federal and provincial elections every 4 years as that''s it*

Anchor: We vote for president in ''08. This years elections can be for governors, senators, mayors, etc. depending upon where you live.

I voted for:
US Senate
US Congress
Governor

Bunch of State positions like auditor, treasurer, attorney general. Those are usual pretty quiet elections but we''ve had massive scandals that involved all three offices to some extent. So people are paying a bit more attention this year

Judges and Sherrif - not a whole lot of point there since none of them had any competition!

State consistution admendments, and giving the county/city/state permission to borrow/raise money for something like schools or more firemen - known as bonds.

here were are voting on (varies by district within the state and also varies by state):

US house of representatives for our district
state senator for our district
state reprensentative for our district
governor
mayor
some judges and other elected positions
various state law changes, state constitutional amendments, and bond measures.

I did my civic duty.

But I have one gripe... I don't think people should be allowed to accost you outside polling places. I had people literally running up to me when I got out of my car and chasing me all the way to the door! It was very disconcerting. What makes it worse is that one of them was an actual candidate. He was like "I'm XXXX running for XXXX, will you vote for me?".... That's not the way to get votes!
38.gif

My district voted out everybody I didn''t like. YAAAAY!!!

I''m so glad it''s over! I voted 4 minutes after my polling place opened yesterday but was kind of bummed that we didn''t have "I voted!" stickers.

I''m also in the DC/MD/VA area and it has been especially nasty this year! The MD senate and governor races were so muddy... and the Republican candidates would NOT stop calling us. Neither of us are registered Republicans but we got 6 phone calls a day for about a month! UGH. They were so desperate they actually passed out literature at the polls proclaiming themselves to be DEMOCRATS! Talk about misleading! I''m still angry about that one. So the Democrat supposedly won, but the Republican won''t concede because he told a lot of people to vote absentee so they have to count about 200,000 ballots. They are mostly from two very liberal parts of the state though so I think O''Malley won.

The Senate race has been called for the Democrat in Maryland but the Republican in that race ALSO won''t concede yet for the same reason. Come on boys, you lost. admit it!

VA is still on the edge of their seats to determine the outcome of their particularly nasty Senate race.
