I have been looking at several diamonds online that have a faint blue fluorescence to them according to the GCAL or GIA Cert. Should I be concerned about some fluorescence? What is this going to do to the appearence of the diamond? Will it improve it/hurt it? What causes fluorescence. I know that this is most likely a personal preference to some degree, but I would like to hear everyones thoughts. Thanks.

I have been very interested in the fluorescence conept myself. I did a lot of investigation on colorless diamonds with fluorescence and determined that medium blue fluorescence does not impact the performance of the stone. On the other hand, colorless diamonds with strong-very strong fluorescence may make the stone look cloudy in certain lighting conditions.

With faint blue flour, you're not going to be able to see it, I'm told -- it's an identifying characteristic for an appraiser, mainly.

Run a search on the topic... it's been discussed quite a bit here in the last several weeks. I have a D with strong blue fluor and there's nothing milky about it -very very few stones, even with strong fluor, exhibit milkines/cloudiness. GIA conducted a study that you might find interesting too -I believe it's on their website.

Here are links to a couple of threads you might find interesting:

And this thread shows pics of three stones w/blue fluorescence, an E with strong, and two Ds with medium. In any case, faint blue will most likely not be noticeable at all. I would stay away from yellow fluor though, as it may make the stone face up a lower color grade in daylight.

Hope that helps.

Personally, I think fluorescence is a beautiful thing.

Thanks a lot everyone. I did a little searching myself after I posted the question and found some of the same references that you all have pointed me to.
