Can someone please help and advise me regarding flourecence in a stone, first i thought i wanted it with my belief that the stone would have more blue hues/flecks through it but then i went to a uk jeweller who told me they reject stones with flourecence in them and that they can glow if under uv light but is this if the stone is held right under the uv light? or if im somehwere ie at the bowling/dancing where they do uv lights would my stone start glowing

What are your thoughts please?

Do a search for fluorescence; you'll get tons of good info!

The basics:

1. Yes flour. will make your stone glow under ultraviolet light. Some people like it some don''t. I don''t know if this will happen under all ultraviolet lights or only some? Someone else probably knows that.

2. In bright sunlight stones with strong flour. can look purple or blueish, again some like it some don''t.

3. Flour can sometimes negatively effect a stone and make it look oily or hazy, but as long as you''re working with a trusted vendor you can see if it effects it negatively or not. If it doesn''t make it look hazy, many people like flour.

4. If you haven''t seen a diamond with it in person, make sure you like the look it can give to your stone before you buy it. It''s a personal thing.

Hope that helps!

Fluorescence is only normally observable under UV lighting, the best way to describe it is a sort of violety blue glow, rather than flecks, throughout the diamond. Opinions differ on fluorescence, personally I love it and am pleased if a diamond I am considering has it. It is a subtle kind of effect, your diamond wouldn''t look radioactive or anything while cosmic bowling etc! There are some threads with pics in and a video in the video gallery.

I absolutely love strong blue fluorescence in a stone, provided that it is not what we refer to as an overblue which turns "oily looking" in bright sunlight.

Many of my clients do too! This is a see it for yourself thing, do not let the typical "If we have to explain it then it must be bad" atitude of your jeweler affect your decision. You might love it, you might hate it, but either way you should get to make up your own mind.

Thank you all, after reading the posts my head is saying go with slight flourecence if that gives a slight tinge but doesnt glow at the cosmic bowling, ive seen some pics from another website showing the 4 grades and i would be happier with slight.

Slight flour is very pretty!! However, I wouldn''t turn down a diamond I was interested in just because it had medium flour either. Strong is usually fine as well.

I like to note that we typically describe the small number of negatively effected diamonds, called overblues, as 'milky or oily' rather than hazy. The reason is because some diamonds with strong fluorescence display what some describe as a blueish, haze or glow in bright sunlight. Many people find this attractive, unlike the milky or oily look associated with overblues that people find undesirable.

...Just observations which may be pertinent when communicating on an internet forum.

I''m afraid I don''t go anywhere with UV lights these days, but I''d love to have flourescence! It''s an amazing bonus that they sometimes cost less.

Ditto, we can take advantage of it until everyone catches on

Only place I occasionally manage to catch it is at the nail place when I put my hands under the nail dryer that has UV lights- but most of the time I don''t have my rings on when I get my nails done. Last time I went though I was w/ my friend who has a lovely eternity set- her 2.4+ center stone had no flour, but like every 3-4th stone in her bands did- it was really cool- I had to explain to her what it was...
