what's the light performance of colored sapphires and colored diamonds, if we allow for the same color and saturation? the same color and saturation part may be a stretch, but I'm just wondering if all things considered (cut color weight saturation etc), if the light performance is significantly different?

I noticed that my sapphire has the same 'look' as a greyish sort of diamond, but I've never seen these in real life. I do know that white sapphires are less sparkly than their diamond cousins...

Diamonds will refract more light; spinels and sapphires will have a lot too, but I think you won't get as much of a multicolored flash as you would with a diamond.

I have not heard of a colored diamond matching the rich colors available in sapphires, pink, blue or yellow.

But diamonds will out-sparkle many sapphires with ease.

Zircons, sphene, grossularite garnets and some others will show both, rich colors and full luster.

We regularly get inquiries about people wanting to use a yellow or pink Sapphire in place of yellow or pink diamond.
I think of all the colors, yellow and pink would be the ones which are most comparable between diamonds and sapphires.
In my opinion there is never really a comparison, unless it's a really bad diamond, the diamond is going to be way more brilliant

Presuming the hue, saturation and tone are comparable (light gray green) and equal in terms of cut quality, a coloured diamond will easily outsparkle the sapphire, showing more brilliance and more fire (multi-colour light return).
