Five-stone jewelry ideas?

I want a piece of jewelry to wear in honor of my five children. It's important to me that it be something I can wear every day, no matter how "dressed down" I might be. I do dress casually - jeans & sweater, capris & tee - nearly every day.

Naturally, the first thing I thought about was a five-stone ring. But I've been thinking about it a lot and am now wondering if I would feel comfortable wearing it every day, all the time, because five-stone rings can look quite "dressy" and "blingy". Even though my new engagement upgrade is a big diamond, I intentionally chose a very simple setting so that I can feel comfortable wearing it every day no matter what I am wearing. Also, I usually don't wear a ring on my right hand and I'm not entirely sure that I would find it comfortable. A ring is still a possibility in my mind but I want to explore other ideas before making that commitment.

I've thought about a DBTY-style bracelet, with bigger diamonds (say, .25 to .40 each, maybe). My concern with that is that it won't look or feel substantial enough because the chain in between the diamonds is so thin. I'm tall, and I worry that such a delicate piece will be "lost" on me. I also wonder about the culets getting chipped since I would have the bracelet on virtually the entire time I'm awake. (I take off my ring a lot to keep it clean and avoid damage, but I tend to leave bracelets on unless I'm doing something like gardening or painting.) I haven't seen a DBTY bracelet with bigger diamonds so I can't try one on to see if I like the look.

Maybe another style of bracelet would work, but I haven't yet seen a style or design that would.

I already have a diamond pendant that I wear every day (simple bezel setting), so I don't want another necklace.

Does anyone have any other ideas that would incorporate five diamonds? I want the diamonds to be identical in size and I want to be able to wear this piece of jewelry every day. Thanks for any suggestions!

Hi,
I'm not sure about what to get, but do agree that having the culets on a bracelet exposed could be a potential problem. I worry with my DBTY necklace and haven't even taken it in to be cleaned b/c of that. I just use a toothbrush at home!

As soon as you said 5 stone and not too dressy, I thought of a daisy cluster necklace with the five diamonds bezel set and connected in a pentagon shape (with an empty hole in the middle or a larger diamond in the middle to represent you and your husband), but then I got to your sentence about the necklace. :(sad

How about a five stone DBTY necklace? Since the diamonds could be as small as you want and they would be spaced out I think it would be pretty appropriate for daily wear.

Thanks, MC, for your input on the DBTY. I have a DBTY necklace too (from Whiteflash) and like you, I worried about the exposed culets. I didn't worry as much because it's a necklace but on a bracelet, I'm just not sure. (I don't wear my DBTY any more since I got my bezel set single diamond necklace because that one has a very special meaning to me and it's important to me that I wear it every day.) I still wonder if, aside from the exposed culets issue, if a DBTY style bracelet would be too delicate on me.

Antelope1, your necklace idea sounds really pretty! Thank you for sharing it. I do love flowers and actually thought of possibly trying to design something with a flower(s) for a bracelet, but then I wondered if I'd tire of it.

Asscherhalo_lover, if I didn't already have my single diamond bezel necklace that I want to wear every day, a 5-stone DBTY necklace would be a perfect idea! Thank you.

A five-stone ring would certainly be the easiest decision (and I'd probably go with a Nightingale from BGD as I love that design) but I'm just not sure ... and it's too expensive not to be sure! ;) I'd love to hear any and all ideas for other jewelry with 5 stones!

What about a 5 stone ring on the smaller cttw side? I have a 1/2cttw 5 stone I wear on my right hand, it's just enough to cover the top of my finger (size 6), but comfortable and understated.

Or an etoile style scattered diamond band. That would be very low set, pretty and confortable.

I have thought about a five-stone ring with smaller stones and an etoile-style band (good ideas - thank you!). I talked with my husband about both ideas. He said that since these stones would represent our children, he didn't think the stones should be too small. I see what he's saying but I'm just not sure I'm comfortable with that much diamond bling on both hands. I know my e-ring is plain but it's still a big diamond. If I didn't want to wear the ring every day, it would be different, but I know I'm going to want to wear it every day. In the end, though, I'm the one who is going to wear whatever it is so I know he'll be fine with whatever I decide and both of the options you suggested are still strong possibilities. I've also thought about a bezel-set five-stone ring, which would need smaller stones because of the bezels and be lower-set and a little more subtle, I think.

If he wants the stones to be "special" for the kids, you could do smaller D IF stones, or colored diamonds, etc. Those would be more valuable/special yet still be small enough for daily wear.

I like idea of the bezel set 5 stone or the scattered diamond band the best, personally. I've got the same dilema regarding rings - I dress so casually that I'd feel odd with that much bling daily! A lower profile band might be the best option.

Hm ... have you thought about maybe getting a bangle-style bracelet, and scattering the diamond over the top, etoile-style? The stone sizes that you're talking about would look proportionate, it would be sturdy yet elegant, and you could certainly wear it every day ....

I hadn't thought of smaller but higher quality diamonds or colored diamonds. Thanks for the idea!

I feel the same. I do have very "plain" taste, though. I guess I've made enough "buying mistakes" over the years that I finally realize what I feel comfortable with and what I don't.

Do you (or anyone else) think a scattered band would look odd with only 5 diamonds? Would you put them all on the top of the ring? I'm trying to imagine how it would look best. Thanks for any suggestions!

I did think of this and I think it would be really pretty, but I don't really wear bangle bracelets. I like link style bracelets much better on me.

Speaking of link bracelets, I really like the Tiffany Jazz tennis bracelet and wondered if there was a way to make something like that but with the majority of the bracelet composed of smaller bezel set diamonds, and five evenly spaced larger bezel set diamonds. I wonder if that would be casual enough for everyday wear? Or if there is a way to make another style of link bracelet with five diamond "stations" and links (or chain) in between?

I really appreciate all the ideas - and would love any more, and more opinions. Thanks so much!

I have a 5 stone .75 ct and I love it, it is very comfortable for everyday wear it sits pretty low and it gives decent coverage :wink2:

HEY... I have FIVE kids too. This is the ring hubby and I had desiged by Mark Silverstein. It has pink diamond and rose gold bands for my daughters and white diamond and white gold bands for my boys. I wear this as an alternate to my wedding ring. when I want a lower profile band ring.

Please excuse swollen fingers.

I have a scattered diamond band with 6 diamonds evenly spaced (about 1/5cttw), I think the same style in 5 diamons would be nice. You could also put them more towards the top, if you had the back of the band taper then they should stay facing "up". I think scattered diamonds in a wide (4-6mm) band would be lovely, you could do soft colors, let each kid pick "their" diamond. I'm pictureing light champagne, yellow, orange, pink/peach, etc.

Etienne Perret makes gorgeous rings in this style - something like this, perhaps? http://www.etienneperret.com/colored-diamond-jewelry/8mm-18kt-yellow-gold-comfort-fit-flat-band

I also love the etolie scattered band idea. You can even have it made with colored stones as well.

I don't think it would look strange at all to have 5 diamonds more towards the top of a scattered band. I've always thought that eternities were a waste of bling (totally just my opinion) since you only see the top anyway!

Your five-stone ring sounds pretty. I'd love to see it, if you have any photos! 8)

Your ring is beautiful! Thank you for sharing.

Your ring reminded me of yet another idea I had, which is possibly getting five different very thin stacking rings to wear together. I love the Beverly K rings, for instance. I also think it would be kind of cool to have five different rings for my five different children. But ... I think it might be too wide to be comfortable, as it seems like the narrowest those rings come is 2 - 2.5 mm. I'd welcome opinions on this potential idea!

MustangGal - Thank you for telling me about your band with 6 diamonds. Are they in a straight line around the band, or "up and down" on the band (hope that makes sense, I'm sure there was a clearer way to ask that question!)

Circe - Thank you for that link to Etienne Perret's rings. Wow! They are gorgeous. I played around a little bit with the scattered diamond designer but unfortunately it doesn't show you anything except the price. This is a very intriguing idea - I think I'd love a matte platinum band with scattered colored diamonds.

Geckodani and Partgypsy - Thank you to both of you for your input! I think the scattered band idea is really growing on me.

Question for anyone who cares to give their opinion: If I do a scattered band, either with 5 colored diamonds or 5 regular diamonds, and those 5 diamonds were larger, do you think it would look good to have smaller scattered diamonds also on the band? Or better with just the 5 diamonds? I'm such a visual person and it's hard for me to imagine various options without seeing an actual piece of jewelry or a drawing.

Not to threadjack but we definitely need pictures of your 'newest' upgrade - I'm dying to see the stone!

I have a five stone band that I wear on my right hand -it's Memoire and is 2 ctw. It is extremely comfortable and is a good match with my wedding rings on the other hand IMO. I like things balanced. I don't have pictures of it on this computer but if you look back through my posts you'll find it!

Hey Blue, what about this idea? It's a pretty, classic band and I bet BGD could make it with 5 stones instead of 13. It would be different, still an anniversary "style" but not too blinging for everyday. I think it was originally made to go with an ER, but it's simply elegant all by itself.

Your Memoire five-stone ring sounds beautiful! I will look for the photos; I'd love to see it.

I like things balanced too - probably why I am having a hard time imagining something other than a conventional five-stone ring on my hand. When I showed my husband the photos on here of the Nightingale from BGD, he said, "It looks like it goes with your wedding rings." I think he meant as far as style, and also size. I tried on a five-stone ring with .34 points (so 1.70 total) and it seemed like a good size on my hand (size 6 finger). If I didn't have the concern that I might be too bling-y, I think it would be a no-brainer for me to get the Nightingale. But I just worry about it being "too much" with my 2.5 ct. stone (albeit very simply set), and my pendant. The typical five-stone ring just looks so much blingier than a solitaire, at least to me.

I still want to consider some kind of bracelet that would incorporate five stones, too, if anyone has any ideas! Two of my ideas so far are a bezel-set tennis style bracelet with five of the bezels incorporating larger stones (but am worried this would look "funny") and a bracelet with five diamonds and links in between. And the DBTY is still a consideration, though I really think it might look too delicate on me due to my height and long arms (and I worry about the culets being damaged).

I will try to take photos of my new stone soon!

Anne, thank you for the idea! That is a really pretty ring which I hadn't seen before (surprising, as much as I browse BGD's site!)

I hope your own five-stone ring is coming along well! So excited for you. :appl:

Good - I'll look forward to your photos!

With a 2.50 stone, I don't think the 1.70 five stone ring would look like too much at all. However, you have to be comfortable with what you're wearing or it's not any fun. It would be great if you could get out and try some on; them you'd have a better feel for the size.

Hey Blue, thanks! :) I got the first set of CAD's today so it's definitely in-process! :)) I can't wait!
