Hello everyone!

This is a very quick 2 part question. I saw this on the 23rd Street Jewelers website

http://www.23rdstreetjewelers.com/aCatItem.aspx

1) Is this fishtail pave, and if so, is it different because it looks like (from side profile) that the surface is polished and smoothed out? It looks different from other fishtail pave looks I've seen on PS, because the texturing from the fishtail is gone on the sides.

2) If this isn't fishtail, then what pave is it? I'm still learning the visual differences.

I would like fishtail because I like the way it looks from up top but the texturing turns me off on the sides. Would love to know how I can achieve that pave look shown on the 23rd Street Jeweler's website if I were to ask for it from a custom designer. I've also seen this sort of smooth finish in the Michael B collection's website, if that helps PSers who may own a ring with that look. Perhaps it just looks smooth and polished from far away?

Thanks so much!

pannini-which ring are you asking about, your link isn''t working, what page is it on and what''s the item number and i''ll do a screen shot and post it for you.

based on what you are describing you are wanting smooth sides. that is just regular beadset pave. to my understanding fishtail or V pave is the texturing on the ring and what you don''t like.

hi Mrrsalvo, thanks again for answering my questions! i am sure i''m beating a dead horse by now, but i think after i get the confirmed answer i''ll be able to figure out the rest...

It''s on http://www.23rdstreetjewelers.com under the Rings Menu, under the Diamonds Menu, page 2 of the Menu, 3rd item: SMR3719

It''s a round brilliant diamond ring with octagonal micro diamond border and gallery set in platinum, but I am just looking at the shank''s pave setting here.

okay, that ring is not fishtail pave...

it reminds me a lot of the WF Aramis setting...

Wow it truly does, you really know your history of rings on PS!

Doesn''t it look like a bead set that doesn''t have the borders (channel type borders)on either side? That''s why when I asked about bead set pave and channel bead set pave I thought they were two different types.

Thoughts on this?

I am curious now what the name of this pave would be....

Maybe to make it less complicated and stick with my first preferences awhile back, is to just stick to the bead setting I preferred. I think my time on PS has made me an indecisive or picky person.

If I had to give that style a name I would probably call it prong set pave

I think the key is just making sure you have a lots of pictures and that whomever you are having custom make it understands exactly what you are wanting. Obviously if you go with Leon or WF they already have made rings like that so I personally would go with one of them or someone who has experience making that style.

I believe that is similar to ''mushroom pave'' or ''Harry Winston style pave'' in Leon''s term.

Okay, that''s just strange. I have the 201 Adrianna and the 811 Adrianna and are both v set. Now the 201 is listed as mushroom pave and the 811 is still v set?

To be fair Leons v set pave looks like the mushroom with a smooth edge and no jagged uneveness, just thin lines on the edge. I don''t think all v set pave are created equal.

My v set....

Over the past year lurking around PS, I''ve been trying to figure out different kinds of pave. Yes, I agree with you that Leon''s v-pave is not as prominently etched on the edge as others. Actually they are quite smooth and looks pretty much the same as the mushroom. In fact, when I first saw your set I thought it was mushroom pave but to my surprise it turned out to be v-pave.

If you look closely the magnified photo in the second link, you can distinguish the "u" shape linking each of two prongs which is lacking in v-pave (both in leon''s or others'' versions).

I was looking over this thread and realized I didn't really see what I thought of as fish-tail pave. I have an example of what I believe to be true fish-tail pave. See how in this piece, each pave prong is split into two as if it was the tail fin of a fish, each side securing a diamond. Help me out if I am mistaken.

I think the distinction is more of a semantic one than anything. It would follow that fishtail is a specific style of v pave.
