First Timer: Advice on situation with Jared

Hi Everyone,

About one month ago I knew absolutely nothing about diamonds. I have been doing as much research as I can because I am planning to propose and want to do this right. She loves petite rings with the millgrain and engraving style, but no halos. Since she is picky with the mount it has been harder to find that. Two weeks ago, I picked a diamond and a mount at Jared. My total budget was $3,000. Specs below:

Double certification from IGI and GIA (which they told me rarely happens)
Round Brillant 5.00 - 5.04 x 3.11
Cut: Excellent -- Polish: Very Good -- Symmetry: Very Good
Color: H -- Clarity: VS2
Carat: 0.47 -- HCA Score: 1.9
Price $1,800

Mount: $850

Now for the situation. The Jared in my location is being renovated, so they had to send everything to a separate location to be set. Last week it was supposed to be back for me to look at. I got a phone call saying that UPS had lost the package containing my order and they cannot find it. Jared told me they would replace what I had ordered with an equal or better. They tried claiming that a IGI Excellent cut is about a GIA Good; however, since mine was certified Excellent from both I called BS on that. They told me corporate would only allow me to replace what I paid plus 10%. I haggled them to 20% and picked 4 GIA diamonds from their database to view in store. All these replacements have equal or better cut, color, and clarity but they are all smaller diamonds (.44-.45).

A large part of me is yelling to not accept anything less than what I originally ordered. The closest diamond that meets the original specs or better is a good 40% more in cost and I think Jared would rather lose my sale than take a loss like that. I know most of you dislike Jared and I know I can find better deals online. I am becoming more open to the idea of ordering a diamond online, but I'm still debating if I should cancel my order and go with something else. Is the difference between a .44 and a .47 negligible? Does getting a $2,100 Jared diamond for $1,800 make it worth it? Does anyone know of similar ring styles that could be found online if I decide to go that route? I plan to propose July 14th. Does anyone have any other advice for a new guy like me? Thanks.

I'd get a 100% refund and go elsewhere entirely.

I meant to also add that if you went with BGD or Whiteflash, I'm sure they could add some engraving to some of their simpler ring designs for a minimal charge. Likely do-able by your July 14 timeline too.

Thanks everyone. I was at Jared before I knew of how badly overpriced there merchandise was. I was victim to the idea that the warranty made it worth it and I know now that most insurance policies that I would take out anyway cover basically all things in their warranty.

I have found some very good diamonds from the online vendors that everyone has recommended. My real trouble is founding a similar mount. It might be that I just don't know the correct terminology to search for. But I will check into custom engraving with WhiteFlash and see if that may work.

Blue Nile had something that I felt was comparable.

Anyone know of some other similar mounts?

I agree with Ame, get a refund and start over.

The original diamond was over priced. Do a diamond search on jamesallen.com to get an idea of what you should be getting for 2,100, for example http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-VS2-Excellent-Cut-Round-Diamond-1496991.asp And actually with the PS discount and wire discount you could still do better than this!

Here is an example of the diamond you bought http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-VS2-Excellent-Cut-Round-Diamond-1463845.asp If you are a PS member and you wire the money it should only cost you 1,192.00 not the 1,800.00 you paid.

I'm not trying to be mean but that setting looks cheap to me and you can do way better for what you paid. The head (part that holds the diamond) was not integrated so it just kind of sticks out and the engraving looked uneven in the picture. Gabriel and Co have some beautiful settings and tons of budget options that don't scrimp on quality.

http://www.gabrielny.com/engaged/style/ER8009W44JJ This one is a bit more but its far better quality than the Jared setting.
http://www.gabrielny.com/engaged/style/ER8131W44JJ a little funky but beautiful

I hope this helps and if you decide to go with an online purchase your timeline shouldn't be a problem :-)

Wow Mrs. W 514, those are some beautiful rings. I had never heard of Gabriel & Co. before so I will give some more looks into their inventory. I do really like a few of those that you have posted.

If it helps, I close to Tampa and Orlando in Florida.

I would also get your money back and walk away.

Since you're concerned about settings, here are some options that are similar to (but, IMO, better-executed than) the Shane Co. setting:

I believe that Good Old Gold carries the Gabriel NY line, if you're setting-focused, you might start with the setting and see what GOG has to offer in terms of diamonds.

Alternatively, pick a good diamond and have it set elsewhere. Some options:
http://antiqueengagementrings.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=3068
http://antiqueengagementrings.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=3075 (Priced in platinum, call to ask about 14k white gold price)
http://antiqueengagementrings.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=246 (priced in platinum, call to ask if 14k gold is available)

ETA: I just noticed that some of the Gabriel rings I linked will only accommodate .75 or larger diamonds, sorry about that. Please check to be sure that the settings will work with the size stone you'll get.

If you really like the Jared setting, you can buy a diamond online and have it set into the Jared mount.

Im glad you like the settings! you can put your info into in here http://www.gabrielny.com/engaged/locations and they will let you know if there is a retailer close to you. If you want to stick to online though I know Id jewelry can get any Gabriel and co setting you want and that vendor is highly recommended. http://idjewelryonline.com/gabriel.php?osCsid=adab3b4kdhc0s658iiec5ismr2 I also think they do a discount to Pricescope members so make sure to tell them where you got the recommendation :-)

Let us know what else we can do to help and you have to post some pictures of the finished ring!!

Yep, I also would get a refund. The price of the diamond was very high...

And, yes, you could always buy the stone online and have Jared set it for you. Just be sure to get the diamond insured beforehand!

Thank you all for the links, I will use them to do some more searching. Laila and MC, I have considered that idea. The only thing that worries me is the horror stories I have read involving people doing the same, Jared chipping or ruining the diamond, and then claiming it to be an preexisting flaw. I guess I would have to inspect and photograph the diamond before I took it in just in case the same thing were to happen.

There is another place that I had looked very early on in my search. I just found the documentation of what I looked at and it is probably a way better deal than Jared's. Has anyone had experience with the International Diamond Center? They have a few locations in Florida and one in Georgia. The diamond I looked at there is:

Cut: AGS Ideal 0 (ID, ID, ID)
Color: 1 (F)
Clarity: 6 (SI2)
Carat: 0.572
Proportions: 61% depth, 56% table, 33.9 crown and 40.9 pavilion.
Price: $1,600

Only potential issue is that the report is from August 2000. How reliable are the reports from that long ago? I know the technology used in grading has gotten much more accurate now. Might be worth it for me to go back and have a second look at their selection.

You would want to be sure to have a certified diamond insured before Jared goes near it to set it into the setting you picked out...but that said, I'd avoid them at all cost since they did already make a huge blunder. Plus, add me to the list of those who is not a fan of Jared's. I don't trust them AT ALL!!!

I have never heard of the International Diamond Center nor would I buy a stone with a certificate that old unless it was a pre-owned stone. Have you looked at Whiteflash and some of the other known vendors? It seems kind of risky to go from a company who lost your ring to one you've never heard of at all!

I am not such a fan of te head on that original Jared mount, its a peg head and not integrated into the shank. My point, I think you can find something better. Can your gf help you pick? Seems silly for you to have to do it on your own when she is picky.

I think you must be living right - Jared losing that ring is a huge, lucky break for you. Take the money and use it to put together something far more beautiful for your girlfriend.

I honestly don't care for that Jared's setting at all. Remember that much of the time your GF will be seeing the side view, and the side view of that ring is just not that attractive. And as you've seen, there are much more beautiful examples of engraving out there.

Good luck!

Tacori makes a lot of rings that look like the one you chose.

I have taken the lady around to browse before. Her favorite pick was a Neil Lane ring: Neil Lane Bridal 5/8 carat. I told her I could found an even better one which has proven quite a challenge.

I have looked at Neil Lane, Scott Kay, and Tacori. All of them have beautiful rings, I just feel the price will limit the money I can put toward a great diamond. It is a funny thing because my boss keeps telling me the lost ring is a "sign" that I shouldn't be married. I like to think that it was so I could learn some more and get great help from PS.

Tomorrow I go in to see the replacements at Jared. Trying to keep an open mind but I have a strong feeling I will be leaving there with disappointment and a cancelled order.

Yes, but just the mount would be out of the the OP's budget.

I would nix Jared entirely - they lie, and they lose your things! Stick with a PS vendor, and pick one of the many lovely (and similar) settings that other posters have suggested. You'll save money and have a far better quality ring at the end of the day.

I feel compelled to add that your boss is an idiot. What kind of a thing is that to say anyway?...unless you're the type to have an extra couple of ladies on the side, go clubbing to hook up with strangers, and frequent prostitutes. Then perhaps he is right. But if you're a normal guy with a healthy relationship, it seems like a very inappropriate remark.

Yes, your boss is an idiot,   but prob just trying to
make light of a bad situation....

Hey you know, I am incredibly impressed with not only the diamonds
but the settings choices that the members here have found for you !!!!

AMAZING and PLEASE take their advice !!!

Also, I have a smallish stone set into a Gabriel and Co setting
and COULDN'T be happier with it !!!

And IDJ ROCKS !!!! if you want my opinion....
They get stuff done quickly, too.. :))

Avoid a peg head setting like the plague! My original E ring had a peg and it fell off, thankfully in my kitchen, and I heard it hit the floor. I am NOT hard on jewelry. I take it off before I do anything with my hands, but pegs are just NOT secure. You run the risk of hitting it inadvertently, not knowing it is now loosened, and having it fall off when you don't even realize it. My new E ring is an incorporated head. No chance of it falling off. And an incorporated head is much more attractive than a peg that is just soldered on to a shank. Good luck, and be sure to let us know what happens.

Gabriel settings are very nice and I like the quality. They actually can accommodate any size stone, just work with an authorized retailer and they will assist you with that. The only one I know that is online is Good Old Gold, but IDJ might also carry that line.

i NEVER had an issue with a peg head breaking off. Just for the record.

What your boss said is obnoxious. If it's a "sign" for anything, its that Jared, esp this location, is shady and not worthy of your financial investment.

Hi Ame - I took the liberty of scoping out your ring. It is stunning. That Vatche Royal Crown setting is just lovely. That is not a peg setting though. Maybe you have other rings with pegs? Anyway, if you do have others with peg settings and have not had a problem, you are lucky and blessed. For the women who do lose stones from their settings, many just have the whole peg and diamond fall off and go missing due to a peg. Anyway, just a heads up for the OP. Here is a story about pegs: http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/e-ring-broke-for-a-2nd-time-what-to-do

It's a "sign" that ring wasn't the "right" ring and you now have the opportunity to do much better!

If you like the Gabriel & Co settings, call Yekutiel at IDJewelry - if you tell him what what setting you like and what size stone you're after, you will get it within your budget and the finished product will blow her away.

I don't really advocate purchasing from chain stores, but if she loved the Neil Lane ring and it is within your budget why not go for that? Most girls (non PSers) could not tell the difference from a higher quality ring/stone, and she would probably be thrilled that you listened to her and got her what she loved.

Otherwise, if she was just ok about it and not in *love* I would go for one of the above suggestions, this Beverly K, or an actual antique ring.

Pearlman's will give you a PS member deal as far as I know and I'm sure if you get the stone and setting from them they will give you good pricing as well. Plus they are so friendly :)

Jewel's by Erica Grace are amazing! I love this ring- listed on their website for $2750

I was also going to link that beautiful antique ring to the OP-I think its beautiful and a great price!

Another place to look for an antique style setting is here

There is a very good chance they'll also have a ring you'd love that is already put together. Just call Leigh and tell him you're a PSer and tell him your budget and email him some photos of the Jared setting and I'm sure he has something possibly not even listed on his site that probably will fit the bill.

Please don't go to Jared. I went to Jared after buying my stone from www.goodoldgold.com and they sent me to the closer store to me since I wanted a scott kay setting (antique in style as well). Long story short they didn't carry scott kay and by the time I had gotten there I had my stone unset for 3 weeks. They convinced me to get a plain setting (which was VERY thick and NOT flattering to my stone at all) and charged me 300.00 for the setting + 200.00 for the crappy peg setting (after trying to talk me into 400.00 platinum head which made no difference) and then an additional amount to set it. I walked out of there with over 600.00 in a crappy setting when the setting I wanted was only 1200.00 at the time-all because they didn't want to set it at the first place. I was very unhappy and my then bf was unhappy since I had spent so much time going back and fourth over the ring.

Just search for jared on here and you'll see all the horror stories-I'm surprised they even offered you 10-20% more let alone a refund. Take it an run!

ETA: Here are a few rings that I found that might be in your budget. I'm assuming your at about the 3k range with tax and everything that you paid for the Jared piece? Including the warranty (which btw just get jewelers mutual insurance-way less hassle and way better coverage for a way better price than your paying at Jared)

There are a ton more on his site just have a peek :)
