hey guys,

long time lurker, first time poster. i'm planning to take the plunge this winter and purchase and engagement ring. i've done quite a bit of homework and have a good idea of what i'm looking for. here is a link to a stone that i've become very interested in...

http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-search?track=head#diamonds_pid=LD02869052

scores a 1.5 on the HCA tool and i'm hoping the faint fluorescence will make the I color appear whiter. price is also right on for my budget (which actually goes to about $5k).

can anyone give any advice about this stone or other potential stones. i'm pretty set on Blue Nile since they have the setting that i really love...

thanks!

The only thing that I don't like about BN is that they offer very limited information on the stones. I thought that they offered gcal reports on their signature line but I couldn't find one for this particular stone. The proportions look good, and since it's a VS1, it will be eye clean. But other than that it's difficult to say much more about the stone and it's likely performance. They do have a good return policy though if fails to meet your expecations. I thought that I'd mention though, that since the stone only has faint fluorescence you're unlikely to notice any benefit from it. The diamond is unlikely to appear any whiter than it's true color in any lighting environment. Typically you only notice a benefit from fluorescence it meduium to VSB ranges.

that is not a Signature Ideal, actually. it's an ideal that meets/exceeds the Signature Ideal specs according the person at BN i just talked to. sadly, that stone is gone. would anyone have any thoughts on this one?

i'd also love other recommendations from BN even though i have 16 stones in my comparison right now, haha.

I hate to say this, but that setting is really not very good quality. It says the stones are I SI2 and "good" cut. That style setting is very common, and I would go to a vendor that carries better quality settings.

The new diamond looks good on paper, though, and the medium blue fluoro is a bonus!

true, the setting does look a bit shameful compared to the center stone. sadly, i'm looking for a very specific setting with 8 side stones and the center stone being the 9th. these are very important numbers for my gf. i did find this one on White Flash which looks to be of better quality. anyone have any experience with their larger stones?

They are one of the most recommended vendors on here. You can do searches for the reviews. Their stones are very good quality.

I'd ask Blue Nile if they will let you upgrade the diamond in their setting. I prefer it to the Whiteflash setting in style. It's got a much nicer profile. If they will let you upgrade to nicer diamonds.

hmm, sounds like the WF ACA might be the way to go. price seems very competitive and the setting does appear to be nicer. honestly, this isn't an easy experience, haha.

so BN said no to changing out stones in the setting. i'm thinking about going with WF. here are the specs i'm looking for if anyone would be interested in providing me some advice ;))

.80-.85 carat, round
VS2 or better
I color or better but would really prefer H or better
ACA cut
<2.0 on the HCA scale
budget is $5k for the stone but would rather be closer to $4500

thanks for all the help so far. this seems to be a really nice community.
