My budget is roughly $2000-2300. I'm looking for the most bang for my buck on a diamond no smaller than .70 carats. I came across these that seemed like very good diamonds. I'd prefer a colorless stone with no more than SI1 (God help me) clarity. The cut seems like a big deal, so ideal is what I'm going with. What are your opinions? Diamond 1 or Diamond 2?

Thanks ahead of time! Also, any first time buyer suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I plan on buying the LP2076 mount from www.simongjewelry.com

EGL is known to be soft on grading, so those would probably not be graded E/SI1 by GIA or AGS. I would look for GIA or AGS stones only so you can be sure the grading is reliable

I agree with slg that I would only consider GIA or AGS lab reports. Do a search here and put in excellent-excellent for cut and click "in-house" so you'll see stones that jewelers actually have on hand.

Re: First time buyer choosing between 2 ~.7 carat diamonds.

Thanks for all the great input so far. So if I need to sacrifice one area, which should it be? I don't want to go smaller than .70

Here is my order of preference before doing too much research:

1. Cut -- it seems like you can have the best diamond ever, but if the cut is poor it isn't going to look very good at all. Its all about the functionality of reflecting light! If the HCA said excellent for the 1st 3 and VG for the last, but the certificate doesn't have it at ideal or excellent, should I be concerned about its abilities?

2. Color -- I have heard that you only notice a difference when compared immediately against another one, but there is something urging me to get colorless. I would prefer at least an F... but I'm working on a budget!

3. Clarity -- I would never go below SI1. I definitely wouldn't want a diamond where the untrained eye could see an inclusion, but I don't know too much about this. I know that it affects the way the light can be transmitted. VS just seems very sexy, or am I wrong?

4. Carat -- of course I want bigger, but I would rather have the above 3 met before going bigger within my budget. It must be a .70 at least! That is my only stipulation.

If I have to deliver pizzas for a couple months to make the diamond I want for my future fiance, then so be it! I am a man of quality, not that the ring's quality/value gives her value; our security is not in jewelry, I just want to do this for her. Feedback please!

So I went to the jeweler, and she showed me a GIA certified rock that she could bring down to $2400...

stick with GIA Ex for cut. that one is way too deep (64.8%), measures smaller than excellent cut of same carat weight.
