First pearl post

I know nothing about pearls. Zero, zilch, nada. My mom had five strands and I was able to separate the freshwater from the akoya as they were labeled. Sold one freshwater and other still listed. Anyway I want to sell at least two of the akoya because I’m not a person who wears pearls and I was going to keep one for sentimental reasons. My question is would a regular jeweler also be someone who could evaluate pearls? Or do I need to find some sort of pearl specialist? And any names recommended if I had to send them off for appraisal? I have no clue how much she paid for them what they’re worth or anything like that. I’ll post a picture that shows the three.

Most secondhand akoya pearls aren't usually worth being appraised, sadly, unless they are of top, top quality or have some kind of especially intricate clasp with diamonds or other precious stones.

Best advice would be to look at a site for selling jewelry or even a place like eBay to start and see what actual pearls like yours have sold for, which should give you some kind of idea.

A regular jeweler should be able to evaluate your pearls.

For most, by the time costs such as restringing and effort of listing somewhere are taken into account, you may find that the pearls are worth more sentimentally just to keep, or to gift to a family member.

I have only recently found a love for pearls after inheriting mum's strand (and i lived quite happily through the 80s)
Tastes and fashions do change

Your mum's pearls most likely might need a restringing anyway and there is no reason you couldn't have a little fun with them and have a play around
