Hello,

I'm looking into buying my first diamond(engagement ring) and am definitely overwhelmed when reading through posts on this site. I believe i understand the basics but would love it if someone could help simplify or refine my search.

My girlfriend pointed out a princess cut diamond in a halo setting, so i guess the advice i'm searching for is what's going to get me the best bang for my buck for the diamond that goes with it.

My budget is 4500 and the setting that she pointed out is:
http://www.brides.com/engagement-rings/princess_cut/WER7266D4-2000000002244557/

Showroom price at the local Jewelry shop puts it at about 1500.00(14k-White Gold) which only leaves about 3000.00 to spend on the diamond.

I've heard nothing but good things about GoodOldGold, and they sell the setting i mentioned above. Is there a better route than going right to them to pair me up with the appropriate diamond? I don't know if i put faith in my own eye to compare light maps, maybe it's just a lack of confidence.

Any advice would be appreciated, especially with respect to size vs quality in this setting.

Dave

This will be a nice size, beautiful colour, and great clarity. Also the cut is spectacular cut is the most important factor when buying a diamond

The setting I linked you can be made to fit a princess at no extra cost, all up it comes to $4574 after the discounts are applied.
This ring would be amazing ! And it would take her breath away,

I hope this link works

Let me know if I can help further :)

I would stick the extra money towards going for platinum rather than white gold as well.

White gold needs to be replated every once in a while while platinum doesnt.

Make sure you are okay with patina though, and have a look at some of the metal choices on the forum as well.

There is not a huge face up size between the one I posted & previous posters one compared to the one you chose,
I personally would pick one of the ideal cut ones above over yours, slightly smaller but guaranteed to he far better performers, cut is something you should never compromise on :)

is the budget now 4k?

I was shooting for 4500 total, but i guess i was asking for something that wasnt advised.

I can stretch the 4500 mark to attempt to get closer to 1 carat.

Either would be lovely but I'd prefer the I colour :)

If you are able to stretch your budget, I'd go with this GOG 0.92ct G-VS2 Signature Ideal Princess - it is a perfect square which is always my preference for a square/princess-cut diamond - and it faces up basically at 5.3mm so about as large or larger than most of the other suggested stones with larger carat weight - http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/12036/ - it is priced at $4,800 but if you pay by wire there may be a discount - and I believe GOG's pricing on the Gabriel setting will be more competitive than your local jeweler's pricing...

In any case, I definitely would not recommend a J-color princess unless you know for sure your GF is okay with some tint.

GOG's Gabrielle setting I "think" is $1095
