Hi all,

New to the diamond scene and trying to learn as much as possible before my first purchase. Have read lots of info on the site and learned a ton since i started looking. Buying time is getting close and I am starting to look at specific diamonds.

Have been mostly looking at white flash because we both really like the "platinum legato sleek line".I am open to other vendors but haven't come across a similar solitaire setting.

http://www.whiteflash.com/engagemen...-sleek-line-solitaire-engagement-ring-729.htm

Budget for the diamond and setting are around $4k (lower is appreciated!)

We are ok with SI1 as long as eye clean, and are open to color as low as K (but would prefer I).

Today I found the following stones:

http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3098843.htm

http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3059449.htm

All my research shows that both are great stones but I am curious if going from J to I and the extra .05 carats is worth the $1K premium.

Thoughts? Will an increase in .05 be obvious?

I am open to any other thoughts for diamonds or rings (i am amazed at the great suggestions on the board!).

Thanks!

You would not notice .05 caret. It all has to do with diameter anyways, so you'd have to look there. Both stones look very nice.

However.... I stumbled across this one today and the ASET on the AGS report looks incredible, not to mention the blue fluor of the diamond would make the I face up whiter possibly (aside from the super cool effect fluor has one stones). Its a VS2 so its almost guaranteed eye clean from all angles.

I strongly recommend you at least put it on hold, it appears to be just graded and can't see it lasting long at that price and for those specs. It looks spectacular.

Thanks for the suggestion!

I took your advice and have that stone reserved. I also confirmed it as eye clean.

Most of my research has been looking at Hearts & Arrow stones. I know H&A doesn't always lead to more sparkle but how would the performance of this stone compare?

BGD also pointed out this stone if I decided I need H&A.

Thoughts?

Or is the .711 BG Blue an obvious choice?

Thanks again!

I think the blue is pretty phenomenal... See the arrows in the Idealscope image? I'm fairly certain it would be cut with obvious hearts too...

Remember, hearts and arrows doesn't signify excellent cut, it's a style. The idealscope and ASET images shows proof that a diamond will sparkle. This particular one will be quite the performer, it gives every indication it will knock her socks off. I bought my lady a blue fluor diamond too and it is set in platinum and wow! It looks awesome.

Are you familiar with fluorescence? Something you like? I find it to be so unbelievably cool and unique, I mean, just look at that pic on BG website for that stone under black light? The fact that molecules react and make a diamond glow blue is super neat to me.

Wait to see what some other experts say of the diamond and price. MAke sure you ask for the pricescope discount, but I much prefer that blue diamond over the other they linked you too.

Your thoughts?

Sorry to answer your question. It too is an AGS000, so just as well (if not better). It's a great stone.

Ask them which one is a better choice, and take that one. BGD will be honest with you.

This... Although I think the playing field changes depending on whether your intrigued by the blue fluor on not. It appears, since we obviously can't see in person, that both stones are a coin flip in terms of which is better. As mentioned, for me the blue would be an easy choice, but everyone's preferences are different. Your good either way!

Great idea! I am leaning toward the blue but will ask which is the better performer before placing the order.

I do like the blue flour and believe this combined with VS2 clarity and I color could be a great value for the $$.

Just so I can understand the difference in value/performance, what do you think of this stone:

http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/d...-ags-c-104069378116#!prettyPhoto[gallery2]/0/

Similar size and AGS000 but $500 less. I see the color is J and the ASET image shows inferior symmetry.

I understand the effect of J color but how will this diamond perform compared to the other 2? Would the "sparkle" be noticeably different? (I understand only I can determine if savings is worth the trade-off but i guess i am looking for a better understanding of performance trade-off)

Thanks again for the great suggestions and education!

J's are lovely. There are no 'bad' colors. That said, when you are buying a ring for someone else it's best to be conservative. So I would stick to one of the I colors. :wavey:

Again.. Agreed.. Plus what is 500 bucks 25 years from now.. Stick with the whiter color and remember that often fluorescence helps a I/J colour diamond 'appear' one to two colour grades better.

Let us know what you decide and congrats again!

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

I ended up going with the .711 BG Blue diamond and the classic truth solitaire setting.

Working with BGD was great and they were helpful deciding between the stones available.

Congrats! It appears to be a gorgeous stone. Wait until she gets it out on a really nice sunny day! Remember to clean it regularily...you paid for top of the line, so show it off! Just some warm water and dish soap in a large bowl and a spare toothbrush.

May I ask what BG said about the two stones in comparison? The other looks great too. Please post a couple pictures when you get it in.
