Hi everyone. I’m new to all of this and I’m having trouble finding the perfect engagement ring. This site has a wealth of information and I’m glad to have found it, but I’m still trying to learn many of the acronyms used here!

We’ve discussed rings in the past, so I have a general idea of what she likes. We’ve even shopped around at the larger brick and mortar stores, but she didn’t fall in love with anything. What she thought looked good in pictures did not look so great in person. When I make the purchase, I want to do so without her knowing.

I’m open to either buying the setting and stone separately or together. From what I gathered, some designer brands only sell them together. Is there even a benefit to buying a designer brand? Some stores said they could make it look almost exactly the same, but I would have no clue about the quality/craftmanship comparison.

She’s pretty set on a square or rectangular stone, so I’m guessing it will either be a princess, radiant, cushion, or emerald cut. Probably more of a radiant or cushion where it’s not perfectly square, but not too rectangular either.

She likes diamonds on the prongs and small diamonds either on the side of the center stone or going around it on all four sides. I’d like to stick around the 20k budget, so buying a stone online makes me a little nervous (especially because I’m new to all of this). But I’m also not totally opposed to it because from what I gathered here, you can get a better quality diamond.

Can anyone recommend any settings or where I should begin looking online? I see a lot of vendors listed in the vendor’s link above, but are they all reputable? Any place I should avoid?

That is great advice Noob - pretty much what I was thinking and said much better than I would have said it.

I would only add: give yourself permission to TAKE YOUR TIME - avoid the "self pressure" of being in a hurry. Other than that, welcome to PS !!!

Thanks guys. I have track email checked, but I didn''t get an email notification so i didnt know there were responses.

I appreciate the tips. I''ll take a look those sites. I guess my greatest challenge right now if finding the right setting. Once I start looking at the specific stones, I''ll be sure to post the specs here for your guidance.

Thanks again

Since you want to buy it without her knowing it, yet you said she didn''t fall in love with anything when you all looked together, lets me think she''s might be a little like me picky!
What might be nice is once you decide what type of rectangular stone that she wants and you locate the perfect one, have it set in a temporary solitaire setting and let her get in on the action with picking her setting that she truly falls in love with. You might not like this, want the total pkg at proposal but just a thought to consider....you got a great budget and she I''d want her to swoon she''s so in love with it!
Good luck-keep us posted!
