I have been looking everywhere for a color change sapphire or garnet. I can''t find anything I like. Please help if you come across a nice one! I am open to all shapes but would like something at least 7 mm. Would like a round, oval, or cushion but I am pretty flexible.

I thought I found a nice color change garnet but I ended up losing the auction

Whoa! Are there really stones that change from that nice blue to that gorgeous pink!?!?! I MUST have one! Wow. Where did you find that one at? Where does one look for such stone? I always thought blue changed to purple. Or that blue and green went hand in hand. I didn''t know Blue can change to that wonderful pink! Wow. A garnet you say? Really?

If I knew where to buy one, I would already have it

Well Charmy where did you find the one you posted? It is gorgeous!

That stone was from eBay. Once in a while, you find really nice stuff on there but so does everyone else!

Charmy - did it go out of your price range or were you not fast enough? There are ways to be faster. . .

That stone looks synthetic in the posting above. I could be wrong. It just "doesn''t look right."

I suspect some creative light effects or photoshop (the background looks tinted) or, as TL said, synthetic.

There are some nice stones in Multicolour, but they can be hard to find, buried under a lot of mediocre or ugly stones. They have some very nice alexandrite.

Hrmm..it definately looks purple, not pink on my screen..

But yeah, colour change are pretty and fun - but they''re not cheap

I have a colour change sapphire (teal green to a purple red colour) and a colour shift garnet.

Here are the photos of my garnet:

Electric light:

Looking at the pics of that one, I am 99% certain that the real thing would be disappointing - the photographs just don't look real at all and the colours look wrong. I really wouldn't recommend ebay if you want a decent one

The good colour change stones tend to come with a fairly hefty price tag as well. The stone above was 1.32ct, has a fairly hefty inclusion that would probably preclude setting it and although I was VERY happy with what I paid - especially for such a good shift, it was not cheap by any means.

Someone on here - I think it may have been Zeolite - posted the most amazing colour shift garnet. It went from a really vivid blue to a cranberry pink. Those are exceptionally rare and are the only truly 'blue' garnets - the come from Madagascar. I had only ever read about their possible existance, so feel very priviliged to have seen actual photos of a real one.

Garnets can't really be colour change - but only colour shift - as they are not dichroic. They show two colours due to the way that the different wave lengths of daylight and electric light are absorbed by the stone. It's a strange - and not very common anomoly.

Sapphires on the other hand are dichroic and so it is much more common to find stones which have some amount of colour change. Good, true changes are still not common.

Charmy,
You have to patient. It''s going to take some time to find the right ones. I bought both of mine 3 years ago.

www.multicolour.com You have to check frequently and dig through all the ugly ones. I couldn''t believe my luck in finding a gorgeous one. It changes from teal to reddish purple and is a pear shape of somewhere between 1 to 2 carats. I don''t really remember the weight.

www.mineralminers.com I bought a 1.3 ct cushion. Colour change is green to purple. Again, I waited and looked and the right one popped up at the right time.

I also enlisted the help of vendors but it''s slim pickings out there.

The seller of the stone above is suppose to be reputable and a member of another gem forum. He is really nice :)

What do you think of this stone from Barry? It looks like there are some dead spots.

I guess I just have to be patient. I feel so bad but I already rejected 3 stones from a vendor. They were fine stones but just not what I am looking for.

It didn''t mention what''s the colour shift, only that it''s interesting.

Charmy - are you after a specific colour change (i.e red to green etc)?

Here's what I've got if it helps:

Alex - Green to red
Garnet - Green to red (difficult to find but not impossible)
Garnet - Donkey brown to Shiraz Red
Garnet - Purple to pink
Garnet - Champagne to Pinky/Purple
Sapphire - Tons of different combinations (I've found the purple/pink variation the most difficult to find)
Fluorite - Royal Blue to Purple

Depending on what you want, I may be able to point you in the right direction. Multicolour.com is always a good start of course!

coatimundi and LovingDiamonds - Thank you for the links. I am going to go investigate them.

I am open to any color change combinations. Ideally, I would love a med blue to med pink / purple. I am also open to the teal to pink/purple changes. Not a fan of the donkey brown :P

One question about multicolor - how accurate are their photos to the actual stones?

I recently bought a few to try them out--colors were accurate in my experience, but I haven''t bought very many from them.

I love that first one too but why is it sooo small

I might have to buy it anyways and put it in a halo. Love the color of the 4th one but the cut

Guess I gotta keep waiting. I have three settings that I want to get new stones for. One round, one oval, and a cushion. I do have a pink tourmaline with great color but also a big window. Can''t decide if I like it enough to have it set.

My experience with multicolour''s picture quality has also been good. It really helps me to read the GIA colour grading that they post for each stone as well.

Ditto. They will always take additional photos for you as well!

Charmy,
Nothing shows up in your link.

The only thing I don''t like about multicolour is that it''s a pain to return things all the way back to Thailand.

OOps...this is a COLOR CHANGE lab Alexandrite....not what you''re looking for.
Sorry!
Still a great ring.
