Ok, after much searching, and a ridiculous amount of help from the folks on this board (see my post called "She put me in charge"), I think i've come to a decision. I'm gonna go with this setting (thanks mercoledi!):

http://antiqueengagementrings.com/shopping/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=22. Its on page 2, number L1005. Anyone have any comments about the quality of the craftsmanship or anything I should know?

I was considering these stones:

Comments? They all look good, but I dont know if the prices are fair. Woohoo! I picked a ring! Were almost there!

Yay! You're more than welcome!

I liked that setting so much I started looking for stones to put in it myself someday.

I found this on ebay from a seller that someone here once recommended. I'm no expert, but it has a 30 day return period.
.66 OEC from MLO PROS

pic of setting since I have it saved:

Well, if it were ME I would probably buy the first one out of those three.

The second one only scores 2 ex. and 2 vg on the cut advisor, whereas the others are scoring 3 ex and only 1 vg.

The third one is an I vs. the first one as an H. PLUS the clarity is much higher on the first one (VS1 vs. SI1)

Unless I'm missing something...

So the first one would be my choice out of those three.

With all due respect to Mercoledi, I wouldn''t buy a stone from Ebay. Too many "what if''s" there. Also, eugene''s not really interested in the stone being antique, I think we established that it''s more the setting so a modern cut RB is what he is looking for, yes?

As to which stone, I''ll leave that to others since my RB knowledge isn''t all that!

So I don''t think I was screeming "BUY THIS INSTEAD". I ran across it yesterday. It happens to suite the style of the ring and be about the right size. I thought it would be neat to look at in the context of that setting. So much for sharing ideas and options here.

Eugenewood- good luck with your stone search.

Out of the 2 JA, the first one, I don't care for the angles on the second one at all.

And I can't get on GOG for some reason.

Sorry I can't be more help.

No, but for some reason, like the last 3 days, it takes forever to get on. But now today, I''m getting the page saying it can''t find it. I dunno...

OK, thanks for the advice. Its the most expensive one, so I should have known it was better. What about this one?

About the same. Not better not worse than the other from JA, EXCEPT for the fact that it faces up quite a bit smaller than the other one. But also is cheaper, so take your pick over what''s more important.

Excellent choices, I love that setting! So pretty, she will be thrilled!

Of the diamond choices, I would ditch the second ja stone in the first batch. The image on that one is yucky. All of the specs on the other three stones looks great. I guess I would go for the H/VS2 from JA you posted since VVS and VS1 is clarity overkill and H is a nicer color than I on the GOG stone.

Also, the company where i'm buying the setting is tracking down some stones for me so I can get the whole thing from them. I'll post specs when I get them. Getting excited...

Do they have an upgrade policy? GOG, JA, and WF has this and you might not want to give it up! The important thing is that they will take responsibility for your stone while it''s in their possesstion, not whether both parts are from them (from the buyers perspective...).

So, Leigh from antiqueengagementrings.com finally found a stone for me. Here is what he said:

I have a .70 round HVS2 with GIA certificate and
ideal cut:
excellent cut grade
depth 62.1
table 56
polish excellent
symmetry very good
fluorescence none
This stone is $2175

Is this a fair price from what you guys can see? (I already asked for crown and pavilion angles and a copy of the cert). That price seems low compared to WF or GOG or JA... I''m getting close!

Wow, that took forever. Heres the rest of the specs:

.70
HVS2
Excellent cut grade
polish excellent
symmetry very good
table 56
depth 62.1
crown ange 35
crown height 15
pavilion angle40.6
pavilion depth 43

It came out to a .9 in the cut advisor. Any comments? I think I should go for it.

also, here is the really poorly scanned GIA cert.

It looks great-I say go for it and propose! Your lady is probably dying waiting!

Also, does anyone have any insight into this part of the cert:

Clarity Characteristics: Cloud

Its VS2, so I shouldnt be too concerned right?

Right, no worries! That is a good price for that stone.
