Hi pros.

I need your help.

My fiance went and proposed to me on Saturday night, I am so happy!

I have a few concerns though. I asked him to get a GIA stone but he didn''t. The person who sold him the stone and ring has these credentials: HRD, CGA, GIA (grader)

The stone is (on the "appraisal"):
Clarity: VS 1
Colour: G
Cut: Very good
Carat: 1.52

The diamond is a princess cut:
7.01 x 6.16 x 4.36

Is this a good diamond? How much can someone fudge the results? Do they have to declare on an appraisal if the stone has been enhanced?

I am going to get it appraised by someone else impartial, I just don''t feel that comfortable that it was not GIA or AGS.

Any advice? Thanks!

You really don't have enough information to determine whether or not the diamond is an ideal cut, but taking it to an independent appraiser should give you the information you need. An independent grader could confirm the color and clarity too, since you seem concerned about the fact that it isn't a GIA diamond.

Since you already have the stone, what do you think of it? Do you think it is beautiful and want to keep it? If so, that really should be all that matters (unless you think he might have gotten ripped off or something).

In my humble opinion, it doesn't really matter about the pedigree of your stone. It is a done deal. I think that being proposed to by a man who loves you and wants to be your husband is the real significance. Be happy and congratulations!

Agree with Finerthings..........move on.

Being happy that I am engaged has nothing to do with my concern about the stone.

I am looking for advice about the stone that my fiance took a chance on.

What I want to know is:

a/ how do we know if the stone is a real diamond and not clarity enhanced?
b/ do those measurements equal a "very good" cut?
c/ will taking it to another appraiser answer all of our questions?

Lil_Dal

a. take it to a good appraisor (some listed on this site)
b. take it to a good appraisor (some listed on this site)
c. Maybe

Lil Dal, a good independent appraiser will be able to tell you if you have a real diamond that is not clarity enhanced and if it is in fact a "very good" cut. You don't have enough information, or at least haven't posted it, for anyone here to evaluate the cut.

A good independent appraiser that you trust should be able to answer all of your questions. If you click on "resources" and "appraisers," you find a list, including some who may be in your area.
