So...I discovered this website several months ago and have found it to be invaluable. As a result of some advice from the message board, I decided to visit Good Old Gold last week and met in person with Jonathon. Great guy - I''ll post more about my experience for sure because he was excellent.

I''ve come down to a decision between the following two:

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/5328/

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/4766/

I think I''d prefer the second diamond because it''s H&A but price is really the sticking point as it is pushing my budget to its limits. I saw both diamonds in person and they both looked amazing to me.

So....before I make the final decision I needed to go back to my "friends in the diamond business" for a sanity check. Do you think I''m making the right decision on one of these and getting good bang for my buck? Or....should I keep on looking?

Happy Holidays!

They are both great stones. Personally I have come to love the H&A look, so if you can that one would get my vote. BUT that being said, the first one will be a stunning stone as well, so really, you can''t go wrong.

Personally I prefer the second diamond too, the first may be an AGS0 along the lines of a 60 60 for table and depth, but the second looks better to me and I prefer the proportions of the second diamond too. It is up to you as you have seen both and these are different types of diamond so it can be down to personal taste also, if the second is stretching the budget then see what else Jon can suggest if you decide against the first one, but in time you might feel that spending the extra was worth it.

that second stone does have Strong Blue floresence. Should he be concerned there?

No worries at all, Jon will carefully evaluate each diamond with SB to make sure there are no negative effects, just check with him to satisfy yourself, but I doubt there will be a problem. SB fluorescence is a nice bonus in an I colour too IMO!

Thanks already for the advice! You guys are great.

So...novice question but I might as well ask. When I first started looking at diamonds, a jeweler told me to stay away from the diamonds that are exact size specification (ie. 1 carat, 1.5 carat, 2 carat), etc. because you are paying for the higher price point but just barely. The second diamond is exactly 2 carats - does it really matter? I''m not concerned about it because I think the size is nice but any thoughts would be appreciated....

You can get price jumps at ' magic weights' and some do say to avoid diamonds which weigh exactly 1 carat, 2 carats etc in case cut quality is sacrificed to hit that weight. However with the second diamond here it has a superb cut so no worries on that score, the reason it could matter is if for example you ever had to have the diamond recut ( highly unlikely but worth mentioning while we are on the subject) as a result it could drop below the 2 ct mark, depending it may not be much below it but to some buyers it could make a difference if the diamond no longer weighs 2 carats.

Thanks Lorelei - that makes sense. Of course, I''m not planning to have it recut but I guess you never know. It''s good to put that advice in the back of my mind as a small factor in my decision. This is a tough call for me - I know my GF only reallly cares about size (and finally getting a ring!

) but now that I''ve learned about the different cuts it seems a shame not to get the H&A diamond. Decisions, decisions.....

I would have no problem buying the first one.

Did you see this one? http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/4550/
This one looks very similar to the first diamond but I don''t think I saw this one in person. Would you prefer this one for any particular reason?

Thanks!

Most welcome!

The diamond NEU linked is a beauty also, the table is a bit larger than the h&a you saw and liked but it is still a lovely rock, depends on personal preference.

If the one you want is onl a small stretch of your budget, ask for a better price.
