Is a fat Oval(1:25 ratio) automatically ugly

It's all about what looks good to your eye. Have you run the numbers here https://www.pricescope.com/fancy.asp to get an idea of how ratio of 1.25 to 1 will look? For my eyes it's a little too much like a squashed out round, but like I said it's not for my eyes- it's for yours. I would also shy away from a J color in a fancy cut, it's easier to see yellow than in a round. I have an I colored pear and under direct sunlight I can see a touch of yellow. Not enough to bother me and not enough to see indoors. But then again, some folks like a warmer color.

I agree with Pearcrazy. It has to be pleasing to your eye but the trade preference for L:W is 1.33 - 1.66 so I would have prefered it in the area of 1.40 - 1.45.

I had a 2.05 D-VS2 Oval that had L:W of 1.38 so mine was a little on the "fat" side too, but that stone was icy white.

Thanks so much for the quick input PearCrazy,CFlutist, & Ana!

I tried the Gem Appraisers imager and looking at your chart Ana, I really like the squatty 1:25!

Hopefully it will be as attractive in person. I won't know until next week.

How does the stockiness affect brilliance and bowtie?

Will an oval show more color than an EC or pear?
I have a J round ideal...how much yellower will a J oval be? how many grades?

Thanks again!

~Kayla

I also had a "fat marquise" which can be found at SMTR

There is no way to predict what that "bow tie" will look like unless you see the stone - it depends on details well beyond what those GIA stats say... If anythign helps "predict" this effect, it would be the courve of the stone's sides - so, in theory, those roundish ones hould have it less. but who knows? I really do not know how to point out more strongly that these diamodns do need a decent presentation - at least pictures, really.

Now, the Q about color grades is interestign: thsoe grades are based on what the stone looks like - so J is J. If your J round does not look tea-coor from the side (to you), set as is, than no other dimamond will look tinted. The grade is the same as long as the grading lab is.

Just my 0.2, as usual

I'm going to have to disagree with Valeria on the issue of color. My mother owns a RB stone I color, I have a pear shaped stone I color. In the middle of the stones both look the same, but since fancies, especially pear and marquise have a shallow, elongated area at one or both ends, that area is where the yellow of the diamond will show more. From the side of course a J is a J but that is not how the diamond is most commonly viewed. Perhaps a rounder oval won't show as much body color as a more elongated one.
