I''ve found a (reportedly) natural fancy yellow stone online at what seems to be a reputable online jeweler (the Ice Store - they swear they have only natural-colored diamonds). I have done a ridiculous amount of research on diamonds, buying diamonds online, and fancy-colored diamonds, and it seems like a decent deal. The picture of the stone looks great. I love the shape and the color. In fact, I like the looks of this stone better than many of their larger or more intense yellow stones (maybe it''s a particularly photogenic stone?). I''m uncertain about the cut quality and moderately concerned about the fluorescence, so I really need an expert opinion about this stone. I haven''t seen the GIA report yet (I''ve requested to see it), but here are the details listed for the diamond:
Cut: Cushion
Color: Fancy Yellow
Clarity: VVS1
Report: GIA
Price: $3,645.00
Measurements: 5.64-5.17-3.39
Depth: 65.6
Table: 70
Girdle:
Culet:
Polish: Good
Symmetry: Good
Fluorescence: Medium
I sent Ice Store an email inquiring about the color of the fluorescence (haven''t gotten a reply yet), but I''m going to assume it''s blue (Like I could be so lucky that it would be a yellow fluorescence?). I''ll appreciate any expert advice that someone is willing to give. Thanks, Liza

Hi Liza,
Sounds like a nice stone.
Can you publish the photo?

Regarding med blue flouresence in fancy color diamonds.
Generally, in stones of Fancy Yellow, it lowers the price- indeed, the price does reflect this.
As far as how it actually affects the look of the diamond: It's not a black and white answer- in some cases I notice a stone has fl at first glance- this is not a good thing. In other cases, you could not tell unless you either looked at the report, or veiwed the diamond in a dark room under UV light. This is good.

I have some photos which document fancy yellow stones with flourescnece- I'll be happy to post them later today, when I'm at our office.

Can't wait!

It is already often said around PS that fluorescence shows more he stronger the body color of the stone - so fluorescence "whitens" I-J colorless diamonds which is ddesirable, but with yellow diamonds, this is no longer so and the effect should be even stronger, in theory. However, I can't say I saw allot of light yellows (some O-P colors only) with a serious amount of fluorescence and I wish I have.

It happens that Icestore lists just one "fancy yellow" cushion - is THIS the stone? Surely photogenic, as you say

The picture below was misstreated (= manipulated) to show what happens to the aparent body color of a yellow diamond when the light spectrum shifts to blue - something that does happen whenever blue fluorescence is excited. Of course the pic is not true to nature - I have no way to know how much blue to throw in! "Medium" fluorescence would not be this much, as far as I immagine - but the range of what "medium" means seems to be rather broad.

Hopefully this little exercise does not stretch the use of online pictures. It is just a qualitative simulation, not supposed to represent any stone in particular

Thank you David. I cannot attach an image of the diamond by itself because that image (is locked) belongs to Ice Store;however, I can attach a copy of the entire Ice Store detail for this stone that includes the image IF... that is legal. Incidentially, as the following reply to my email discoved, the Ice Store currently only has one .92 carat, cushion cut, fancy yellow diamond. So it is easy to look up, if you were so inclined. And I have no problem attaching the image of the web page, as long as I am not breaking anyone's rules.

Thanks Valeria. Yes, the image of the diamond that you found (and have posted) is the diamond of which I speak. It does look great from the photo, doesn't it? I did read up a bit on fluorescence, so the altered image that you present is about what I thought would happen if the fluorescence is blue (and since that is the most likely fluorescence color, I will assume that it is until I see the GIA). The word "medium" in reference to fluorescence bothers me too. It seems vague and open-ended. But if the worst case scenario is the image you've shown, I am not too terribly upset by it as long as it's not that color for the majority of the time.

Yellow diamonds often fluoresce yellow in which case it helps make the color better

Well, I really do not think "medium" is as much as my drawing shows.

The chart below shows colorless diamonds of different color grades (indicated by the large letters: I, G I and K) and fluorescence ("M" stands for medium blue fluorescence, "VS" for very strong, "F" for faint, "S" for strong and "N" for none).

The picture was sent to me by Garry some time back. I think GIA does mention the color of fluorescence when it is anything but Blue. It would be greta if this particular stone would have it yellow (same as the desirable body color, that is) though.

Hope this helps

Hi Lisa
You mentioned you where awaiting a reply. Ariel has been away to a wedding in Israel and will be back in the office Monday 16th Aug 2004
The diamond will defiantly be natural.
As Gary mentioned yellow Flourescence is pretty common in yellow stones

Shown above is a .60 Princess cut- no cert. I grade it to be Fancy Light Yellow- Medium Blue Flouresence
You can see the flourescence in the shot below.

In my experience, about 25%-30% of the yellow/light yellow stones we see possess Blue Flourescence.
In most cases it's not a problem.
Regarding Yellow Fl.- less than 5% of the Yellow or Light Yellow diamonds we see flourescse yellow.
Although Icestore did not list whether it is Yellow or Blue, I'm sure they have that info for you.
The stone is well priced and aside from the Fl, which may or may not be to your liking, there is nothing negative at all on the GIA report that I can see.
