Well, my Mom pulled out a bunch of rings the other day that I didn''t know existed. My grandmother''s been married or engaged at least 5 (or 6?) times, hence, the bag of rings emerges.
Anyway, one of the diamonds in the engagement rings stands out... it looks about a carat, maybe less.. modern round brilliant.. I louped it at 15x, and I couldn''t find any inclusions until I skimmed the rim of the girdle, and I found a small feather. The color is really nice, definitely H or higher.
The cut isn''t BAD because it sparkles, but it''s rather unsymmetrical. I wish I had an IS to check.
I''ve been thinking about convincing my mom to re-cut the diamond, but I''m wondering if it''s worth it. The pavillion facets don''t look terrible under the loupe, but the crown looks uneven. It almost looks like the diamond was chipped at one point, and they ground down one of the girdle facets further down than the rest, so the girdle curves down at that facet. The girdle also looks really ''fuzzy'' underneath that pavillion angle.
I''ve been staring at the ring for a few days now, and I just can''t get over it. I see the potential the diamond has to be brighter and more symmetrical, but I''m just wondering if it''s worth it. It''s going to continue staying in our family, and since my mom doesn''t wear jewelry, and my grandmother''s engagement never resulted in marriage because he got menengitis before they were married, then this is something I''ll eventually inherit. I don''t have any sentimental attatchment other than the fact that my mom has been carrying it around for so long. According to her, she never really liked the guy, but my mom never wears jewelry, and infact doesn''t wear her own engagement ring, so seeing a diamond that size in my family is a huge deal for me.
The only roundabout quote I could find for recutting was $250. Which really doesn''t seem that bad to me, unless it will knock so much weight off that the value is lost.
Whiteflash is right around the corner, so I guess I could always make an appointment to see what they say.. couldn''t hurt.
Any other suggestions?
