I''m looking for some advice regarding a little reset project that''s in the works.

I have 5 x .09 ct stones from an old ring that I want to have reset into a ring of this style (though mine would be roughly 3/4 eternity rather than full as in this picture).

The jeweler would provide 4 smaller stones (.015 ct each) for the setting, which will be in 18K white gold. I was quoted $787. Does this seem like a fair price?

why not email a couple of vendors who do custom work and then you can compare quotes. That''s the best way to find out if your quote is a realistic one or not. I honestly have no idea how much it would cost for such a project.

Why the frowny face? Do you think this too high?

Gold is now around 875 per ounce. Labor to bezel set stones is not cheap if you want it done well, I think to have this piece made in this country that the price is very fair. If you want to send it to Thailand then you should be able to have it made cheaper. Good luck with the shipping, the customs, and the lack of ability to supervise the work and the pain in the behind to ship it back to Thailand if you are not happy with the finished product for any reason.

You should be able to get it done cheaper here too, so long as you don''t mind sloppy solder joints and semi round bezels for your diamonds.

In custom work you get what you pay for, at the price quoted you should receive a good looking piece and have full rights to complain and have anything done incorrectly redone. Getting it done correctly has value and your piece is not easily done correctly.

thanks for your advice, mrssalvo. i do have a couple emails in for additional quotes and will see what turns up.

wink, thanks for your opinion. the little face was less about the frown than the question marks above his head! i''ve never had a project like this done before and was hoping someone with experience might weigh in. the price did seem reasonable to me, but then i have no point for comparison... so i appreciate someone with your expertise confirming that i''d be getting a fair deal!

Hi - this does not sound out of the ballpark to me at all.
I had my ering re-made (18k white gold, I had all the diamonds already) and it was $1497 - it is also a fairly heavy ring.

Offhand it sounds fine, but with a high quality custom designer you could spend even more...I agree with others that suggest contacting a few vendors to get quotes to see what is realistic.

thanks for chiming in, orangemonster and kcoursolle.

since the consensus seems to be that the estimate is fair, and i feel pretty comfortable with this jeweler, i think the project''s a go.

i''ll be sure to post pics when the ring is complete!

thanks to all for your advice

Excellent. I am glad to know I was missunderstanding the frowny face!
