Fact or Myth...?

hello ps,

I have a question about h&a cut diamonds. are all h&a cut diamonds, regardless of who sells them, really cut and polished under 100X magnification? in my home town, a local high-end retail jeweler told my wife this. in fact, ja posts that very statement on their web site:

"A Hearts and Arrows By Any Other Name...
We take pride in presenting only the finest Hearts and Arrows diamonds money can buy - every single True HeartsTM diamond we sell is cut and polished at 100X magnification."

and yet, i have not read this statement on any other's e-tailer's web site when they describe their h&a cut diamonds. so is this fact or myth?

thank you.

Not all diamonds dispalying the H&A effect are cut and examined under 100X. Maybe those sold by JA are, but not all are cut that way. What cutting under 100X actually accomplishes is possibly more a good marketing plan than any real material improvment in diamond cutting as it may well be beyond what the human eye can detect as "better" than one cut under 20X. I can't claim to know what extent 100X matters, but it is not a universal practice.

The H&A effect proves a particular symmetry and approach was taken in the cutting process. It shows care in cutting although a superb round diamond may not have what some sellers might call the best H&A effect present. Does H&A actually matter? I don't believe every expert agrees that it matters, but I doubt any would state that a fine H&A effect hurt the appearance of a diamond, H&A helps to prove to a consumer that care was taken in the cutting process. That is a positive message about the H&A effect.

A small addition: All of our H&A-diamonds are cut and polished under no magnification at all.

The promotional claim that you highlighted makes absolutely no sense.

Live long,

I think that the HOF diamond ads make the same claim but perhaps I am wrong. I am pretty curious about the !00X magnification line too. My guess is that the diamonds are examined AFTER cutting and polishing procedure, mostly at 10X or 20X but can be checked at 100X. Since this examination occurs at cutting house, they can make this claim. But actually cutting or polishing a diamond directly under a 100X microscope I think is impossible. Sure adds a degree of precision to their advertizements though!!! :)

I would totally and completely ignore that! What matters is whether the idealscope image looks good and that is the better indicator for me, personally, than supposedly clever marketing ! And you don't even have to have a perfect idealscope image to have an excellent looking diamond, either.

Live long,

words spoken by a true cutter, someone who takes rough and makes it something so much more, not some ad companies slogan or pitch. Paul your diamonds are amazing, and someday I hope to own a piece of it.

The 100x is akin to talking about the clearcoat on an amazing cars paint.

Live long,

This from the vendor who I think has THE most well cut diamonds period!.

Thank you for the compliment, Gypsy and Ravinmad.

Big difference probably is that I am not a vendor, but a cutter.

Live long,
