what is usually the lowest grade you can go with it being 'eyeclean" on average... thanks

SI1 is the average clarity that I find to be eyeclean.

depends on the diamond size and your age.

I've read elsewhere on PS that most people consider a VS to be safe for eye clean... but nothing works better than your OWN EYES seeing the diamond you are considering. You know best what you can live with and what is eye clean/ mind clean in your opinion.

and it also depends on your definition of eye clean and what type of inclusions the grade making inclusions are. I just recently found an eye clean SI2 because the inclusions were white feathers hid well inside the stone.

I posted at the same time as Enerchi. It's a good idea to read the article she posted, because there seems to be differing opinions even between vendors as to what eye clean means. Some people wouldn't consider a stone eye clean if they could see any inclusions at any distance, some would consider eye clean if they couldn't see an inclusion from normal viewing distances, which is sort of subjective because what it a 'normal viewing' distance? I think most vendors define it as being half an arms length from the eye, however when I'm looking at my diamond, I'm gazing at it from 6 to 8 inches and I don't want to see anything from that distance. So my point is, don't expect eyeclean to mean that you will never see an inclusion without the aid of a loupe, because that isn't what vendors are thinking when you say eye clean. I would be very sure that you stress what you think eye clean is when have your stone evaluated. :)) Oh, just one more thought, in large stone, GIA will allow for larger inclusions, so it's not as likely that you will find an eyeclean stone in an SI1. So if your shopping for a large stone keep this in mind.

Our store just went through the process of upgrading the center stone of an engagement ring 2 additional times because the financee was able to see, without the use of a loupe, inclusions in a GIA certified SI1 and VS2 round brilliant. No one in our store could see the inclusion in the VS2 with the naked eye from the top (it was only visible from the pavilion - who looks at a ring through the pavilion?). The customer spent an additional $1000 to get a VS1 that was "eye clean" from every possible angle. He was not happy and I can only imagine what his bride must be like.

lol thats one of the criteria for eye clean to me too, I prefer not to see anything through the side as well....would I pay a grand more to ensure it, probably not.

On average I think it would be VS2 but you will have some cases where that may even be seen on the side and some cases
where you'll find eye-clean SI1s from all angles.

For me a diamond must be eye and mind clean ( VVS or IF)

I think the clarity grade means less than does the type and locations of the inclusions. I think stones need to be evaluated on a case by case basis. Definitions of eye clean are different for different people as well - I can't have one that I can see even if I only twist and turn the ring or look only at a certain angle because I would look for it each and every time. Guess I must be one of those glass half empty people! I have a very clean SI1 that I got very lucky with - I can see nothing - even with my reading glasses on - and feel very blessed with this stone. My last stone had a twining wisp across the table that you absolutely could not see with the naked eye but I could never stop trying to find it. Drove me wild - hence my last upgrade!

That is an almost impossible question to answer, While I'm sure that there is an average eye clean grade, that grade might not be eye clean to you. It all depends on,

1) size of Diamond.
2) the shape of the diamond and it's faceting, the same type of inclutions will most likely be more visible in a step cut than a brilliant.
3) who put the clarity grade on the diamond, not all labs are consistent within themselves or to other labs, and no matter how good the lab is normally mistakes do happen.
4) is the Diamond at the top end or the bottom end of the clarity grade it has been given.
5) the size of the diamond, the larger it is, the easier it will be to see the inclutions.
6) how good your eye site is, some people have great eye sight while others do not.
7) if you expect the Diamond to be eye clean from all possible angels, and from the side and bottom.
8 ) if you still want it to be eye clean when it's dirty, get a little hand moisturiser and other daily grime on the back of the diamond and some inclutions will become more visible.
9) the type of inclusions the diamond has within the grade.
10) eye clean at what distance, one inch away from the diamond or at an arms length away, or anything in between.
11) lighting conditions when viewing the Diamond.

There are probably more things to consider but you can see from this list why answers to your question will vary.
Find out what's important to you, then make sure what you personally feel eye clean should be matches up with what the sellers difinition of eye clean is.
At the end of the day the real test will be your eyes looking at the diamond itself an making the call, so have a good return policy incase the Diamond isn't all you want it to be.

Hope this helps, good luck.

You've already been given all the answers...and bottom line, you can't generalize because it varies from stone to stone. My daughter has an eyeclean SI1 and I am sure she never once has even thought about looking at her diamond closely enough to see if she can see inclusions, but I do care about them so generally try for VS1 for a ring and I have VS1-VS2 in my studs. I do care about seeing inclusions from the side when the sides of the stone can be seen in the setting. If the stone will be set down into a halo or bezel, then the side view doesn't matter as much. It is a little precarious to order SI stones over the internet unless the vendor really examines the stone for you thoroughly.
