I have my grandmothers 2 stone bypass ring. My mom gave it to me on a milestone birthday. I love the stones but am tired of the setting. I would love to turn it into a three stone. Like this

Obviously I need another of the smaller stones. The two are quite sparkly, never appraised but a jeweler once or twice when it was in for minor repairs guessed H color si2 . They also guessed at about 6mm and 8mm stones.

On a previous thread a few years ago ( see I've been fretting about this ring for a few years!) I thought about breaking it up to give to children for e rings. That's not a plan now. DD got my 2cttw diamond earrings and my sons got diamond and sapphire rings that were my moms when she passed last year.

Ok on to the questions..... What kind of diamonds are these ? OEC, transitional ? Also, who best to get a matching stone? Adam at Old World diamonds seems great, eBay??? pawn shops??? Someone on PS jewelry box?

I wish it was possible to trade the whole thing in for one larger stone but I have a few relatives who would stone me!

Re: Expert opinions on these stones

oooh!!! I love your inspiration ring!!!

I can't see the pics well enough to advise you on the type of cutting, but Adam at OWD, Jon at GOG or Mark/Chris at ERD may be good resources. Ebay may be cheaper but there may be some 'accidents' along the way - and that could end up being more costly than going direct. All depends on your comfort zone I guess. Worth speaking with the vendors and running ideas past them... no harm in a conversation, right?

Re: Expert opinions on these stones

Enerchi , never harm in talking to anyone about jewels!!!
I wish I could get better pics. My camera is missing
( me thinks DD has absconded with it to take baby pics!)
I love the trellis 3 stone you have but my 5 stone is a trellis and I love bezels.

Re: Expert opinions on these stones

I can't tell anything from your photos 8) Do you have a proper appraiser near you who can get proper measurements and tell you the type of cut?

If they are old cuts and you think the smaller one matches the larger one to your satisfaction in terms of cut style, then I would pop them from the mount and send the smaller on to Adam and tell him you want a mate/match for it. Jon at GOG can also perform this service for you.

Re: Expert opinions on these stones

I will go on a limb and say they look like they are probably old cuts of some type, I can see flowery patterning under the table and the table looks small, the light play chunky. I'd risk buying it on ebay in the hopes they were old cuts  So get better pictures and maybe we can help more.

Re: Expert opinions on these stones

For what it's worth, I kind of like the setting they are in! But I do love your 3 stone example as well. Where did that picture come from?

Re: Expert opinions on these stones

ET, I'm LOVING your sample photo. Sure, its a 3 stone and yes, you already have a 5 stone trellis, but neither of the 2 look anything like *that* stunning piece of artistry!! No such thing as too many RHR's! That is gorgeous bezel work - would you go to that person to create it or one of the PS vendors? Just think how stunning the BGD **** shots of that would look... :Up_to_something: :Up_to_something: :Up_to_something:

So--- are you on the phone with anyone yet??? come on!! Lets get results!!

Re: Expert opinions on these stones

Thanks for the comments. I wish I had one of those clippy things for my iPhone:)

Is this any better? It really does look darker in the pics. The stones are very sparkly and are pretty well matched. Sadly my cousin has the 3ct big sister!!!

The inspiration ring was in my three stone folder I believe it was a Caleb Meyer design, but I don't see it on his website anymore. This is another

I'm thinking of going tomorrow to my jeweler and asking for a real look at it, not the cursory oh it's probably a ....
I like my jeweler he is an artist, going to his store is like going to a museum. He is very modern though, loves channel set.
He actually has a pouch of random stones I have to make three rings, so I need to talk to him. Off topic, I am making my sister,my daughter and myself a small bezeled cabochon ring from stones from my mom. I get the sapphire, my sister gets the ruby and DD gets the emerald, because Carter my new grand baby is a May birthday. The rings are going to be simple twist band thin bezel. I dropped them off with him in June!!!

Home for a hurricane day and I'm rummaging through the jewelry box looking for trouble!
BTW... Ordered the band to match my new Ering and it should be here next week. I was very surprised that Gabriel prices went up but GOG honored the quote from June!!! Love them!!! I will probably check with Jon to see what he can find me.
Plus I'm supposed to get up to LI in October!!!!!

Get Ou to Long Island in October?!?! When? I'll be in NYC end of October.... :naughty:

Re: Expert opinions on these stones

Enerchi,
I'm a New York gal transported to Florida years ago. My parents had a house in Southampton and an apt in NYC. Mom passed away a year ago. Brother and sister got the house, I got the jewels! ( they gave me a lot in Southampton that we sold years ago to pay lots of medical bills)
My sister wants us to get out to the house to divvy up the contents of the house. I made her promise we could stop at GOG. Funny thing, she never liked jewelry until my mom passed and now she is very into it! We think she is channeling mom, she was a big bling lover!! So she said a side trip would be fun. Not sure when, we were supposed to shoot for the 14-16 but since darn Issac caused us to miss a day we are losing one of them!
When are you going and will you be visiting the "holy land"? Lol

Re: Expert opinions on these stones

At first I was going to suggest you do maybe a colored stone in the center but as I re-read I see they're 8mm and 6mm... hmmm... I'd send the ring to one of the previously mentioned vendors and get their opinion.

Should be a fun project!

  Yes indeed, that's how I'm viewing the adventure but poor DH is looking at my diamond district day as a tortuous episode of feigning interest!! Oct 30 is the day I hit 47th St! Any chance that's when you'll be in the area? I'll post closer to the event. As we are tourists on limited time, I'm not sure if I'll be able to get out to LI from NYC but I can hope...
