I''m new to the forum, so I hope I''m in the right place, but here goes.

I''ve recently purchased a diamond solitaire ring for my girlfriend, with the intent of asking her to marry me.

That said, I''m just wondering if I got a decent deal, or if I got hoodwinked, and I''m hoping that this forum can help.

Here''s the stats...

Band
14K White Gold

Diamond
EGL Cert

Weight: .52 CT

Shape and Cut: Princess

Measurements: 4.48-4.40 x 3.28 mm

Proportions
Total Depth: 74.5%
Table Width: 67%
Crown Height: 7%
Pavilion Depth: 65%
Girdle Thickness: Thin, Polished

Finish
Polish: Very good
Symmetry: Very good
Culet: None

Clarity Grade: SI1
Graining: Nil
Color Grade: D
Fluorescence: None

What do you think that a ring like this should go for, price wise? Any feedback is appreciated, thanks!

Ray

Without knowing the cut grading, I''d guess maybe $1500?

How would one know the cut grading? I'm staring at the EGL cert in front of me, and I put up any info that I thought was pertinent from it. Is it on there, and I might have missed it? Thanks for the reply.

cut grade should be listed somewhere as "very good" "ideal" "good" "fair"

I don''t see anything like that at all. I don''t see anything about the cut on the EGL cert other than that it''s a princess cut. Thanks for your help though.

Welcome to PS draypac.

Your report won’t have a cut grade on it. The only major lab grading cut for fancy shapes is AGS.

With regard to cut pedigree a princess have many variables so numbers don’t do us a lot of good here. Some broad indicators are there; with a 67% table I’m surprised that it would have only a 7% crown height. In most cases this indicates that there won’t be as much fire in this stone’s performance as stones that are considered to have top cut quality in some metrics – but we can't know that for sure from just the numbers. The best info you could present here would be an actual ideal-scope or (preferably) ASET image. These demonstrate light performance as well as other aspects such as cut precision, contrast, etc.

You're in a better position than we are to judge it since you have it in-hand. If you feel like you should compare it to known performers seek a store dealing premium princess cuts (AGS0 if possible) and do side by side comparisons through several lighting conditions to see what appeals to you.

Also, with regard to color & clarity, be aware that EGL is not as strict or consistent as GIA and AGS, particularly some of the EGL labs outside the USA (you can search EGL in the box at upper right for more info). That may not matter to you if you like what EGL has called a D/SI1 in this case, but it's relevant when comparing prices.

EGL is so inconsistant/ and or lienient in grading, their report means nothing more to me than a a chain store "certificate". I know that you can get a GIA certed D SI1 for around 12-1300.

If you really want to know what you got, I would recommend taking it to an indepedant appraiser, so she can grade it using GIA standards.

I'm sure you can find more threads on here about GIA vs. EGL and other labs.

Oh yeah, and John made some good points. The prettiest princess cuts (in my opinion) tend to have smaller tables (mid 60's ) and higher crown heights. Also be aware EGL can be lienient on girdle thickness as well. If your PC's girdle is really Very Thin or Extremely thin (in GIA grading) you run a small risk of chipping the diamond during wear.

I''m not even really sure where to get an image like the ones you described done at. Basically my girlfriend explained to me that she wanted a plain white gold band with a simple princess cut solitaire when the time came for us to be engaged. She also didn''t want me to spend more than $1,000 because we''re looking to move in together shortly and she''s afraid that would hurt our budget.

So with the information that I''ve provided, not knowing the cut which I''m sure matters a great deal...does $850 sound like a decent deal? I went through a longtime friend of mine who is a jeweler, and I trust to get me the best deal I could.
