Euroshank?

To reduce spin of the ring by having more weight on the side opposite the main stone.

I haven't seen many of these, are they pretty uncommon?

Yap, pretty uncommon. I think some also find it uncomfortable to wear, probably when the ring is slightly tilted.

I've got a modified euroshank on my ring. Not quite as squared off on the bottom side. I decided to get one because my fingers are smaller than my knuckles and I didn't want my ring to spin all the time. It apparently works because my ring never spins.

Yup. It is fairly unknown, but it does work wonders for people with situations like amc above - everyone I know that has one really likes it.
