Eternity Band vs 5. stone dilemma

Hello PS,

I need help deciding between an eternity vs. 5 stone band ( I am looking to either purchase from IDJ, WF, or Lauren B). I would like larger stones only (If eternity, 30 pointers- For 5 stone .40 pointers 2 ct round). The problem is I have small fingers (size 3.5). I'm not sure if the 5 stone u-prong with 40 pointers would fit across ( I don't want it to look bulky and want more scalloped edges). Does anyone have pics with similar sized fingers? I live in an area where larger eternity bands are not common so its harder to try on to get an idea for sizing.

Another option is an eternity band with .30 pointers- I am assuming because my finger size is a 3.5 I would need lesser diamonds ( thus hopefully overall cost would be lower?) Does anyone know how many diamonds would be needed for a size 3.5? I will be requesting quotes soon so any guidance would be appreciated in helping me make a decision. thanks

Hi, I think you need to try these ring styles and sizes on.
With a 3.5 fingers (sigh, says she with the size 8 )I’m not sure you have enough finger width to fit 5 x .40 diamonds with claws across.
And with .30 all around as an eternity, remember the height of the stones with make the ring deep/ thick. So it with be “sticking out” and into your pinky finger and middle fingers. I tried a .20 eternity on and didn’t like the depth because of the “rubbing” on the pinky and middle fingers.
So yes, try on different 5 stone diamond sizes and eternity rings to make sure you’re happy with the look on your finger and fit and feel.

I am also looking for an eternity band and interested in pricing and figuring things out - i posted earlier today if you want to check it out. I am interested in likely .30 pointers too. i have a size 4 finger and i think initially it was said about 13 stones...

also just my preference but i like eternity band style better than a 5 stone.

For reference:

I am in the beginning stages of creating my bespoke 7 Asscher Anniversary Band.
I wear a size 6 ring (5.5 finger).
My 7 Asschers were cut by Yoram of GemConcepts, LTD.
This is his grading report of my 7 Vintage Asscher Diamonds:

I tried on 5 stone rings with round diamonds, in person, to estimate size for my finger. It was determined that 0.25-0.33ct should be my max for comfort, and fit.
My 7 Asschers will cover 3/4 of my finger. For a full Eternity, I’d need approx 5-6 more diamonds of the same dimensions.
Here is a real life perspective of the diamonds against my hand. 0.25ct is considerable, when you have small fingers, and yours are smaller than mine....

I think this may help.
Best of luck to you!! If you need anymore info, or photos for perspective, I have plenty!! :mrgreen2:

It's easy to calculate a rough estimate of the number of stones needed to cover your finger for a 5 stone. It's simpler to think of it in mm measurements instead of ct weight.

First, work out the 1/2 outer circumference of your finger (or use the whole circumference if you want a full eternity)
Ref.: http://www.ringsizes.co/

US Size 3.5 finger = inside ring diameter is 14.45.
Let's say your ring is 2.5mm in height (or plug in your ring height if you know it).
So outside ring diameter is 14.45 + 2.5mm = 16.95 (I'll round up to 17 to simplify things in this example).

To get the outer ring circumference, use the calculation [circumference = π(pi) x diameter]
So here this would mean that the circumference would be 3.14 x 17 = 53.4mm

If you want a full eternity, you would need enough stones to cover the outer circumference of 53.4mm.
For a 1/2 eternity, divide by 2 = 26.7mm

If you want a 5 stone ring that gives you the coverage of a 1/2 eternity, divide 26.7mm by 5.
26.7mm divided by 5 = 5.3mm

This means you should need five stones that are just over 5mm in order to get the coverage of a 1/2 eternity for a size 3.5 finger. (You also need to allow a little room for the setting/prongs etc so I rounded down from 5.3mm to 5mm but this is just a very rough back-of-the-napkin calc, your jeweler will be able to calculate more exactly based on the design you choose).

Finally, convert the mm to ct weight to find what size diamonds you need to get the coverage you want.
5mm rounds are around 0.5ct, but you can look up the mm size converted to carat weight for different diamond cuts here: https://www.brilliance.com/education/diamond-size-chart

Again, this would just be a very rough estimate. Your jeweler will be able to confirm the exact measurements needed since the setting/design of the ring will impact the number and size of stones required.

wow thanks for all the responses.
Mochiko42- Thank you for the rough estimate, I am terrible at math so this is helpful. I am leaning towards 30 pointers in a u prong full eternity for a ring size of 3.5. Hopefully it will look substantial enough on my finger. I have a 3ct oval e-ring and am looking to use the eternity band as a wedding band ( with a spacer).

Hi Rocklife, have you had a chance to try on these styles yet? If not, I would highly suggest you do so. For eternities of 20 pointers and up I would suggest going up a quarter ring size for comfort. I am also a 3.5 ring size for most of my rings, but for my 20 pointer eternity I needed a ring size of 3.75. The 3.5 ring size was too tight, I think it was due to the thicker width of the band.

I am planning to get a 5 stone ring made later this year with 30 pointers, this size is perfect if you want a 5 stone ring. I feel our finger width won't be enough for 5 x 40 pointers. You might be able to get away with 4 stones if you love the size of the 40 pointers. Here are my inspiration photos I have saved for my 5 stone ring. IIRC, the girl who owns it has size 3-3.5 fingers.

Thanks for the pics Mixtress. That 5 stone is a beaut and looks great on her petite fingers ( not bulky at all but still substantial) ! I did get a quote from WF for a 5 stone ACA and its def. within budget so it is certainly an option.
My e-ring is sized at a 3.5 and it is still a bit loose. I haven't had a chance to try a 5 stone in person but I love the look as a wedding band. I need to request a quote for a full eternity with 30 pointers as well ( I'm just hoping it won't be much more $ given that I have really tiny fingers and need less tcw).
